The PS4 Pro started a trend (Sony)
As reader explains why he’s so keen on the PS5 Pro and how its release can help to improve gameplay as well as just graphics.
I got a bit of a fright this week when I saw rumours that the PS5 Pro could be delayed into next year. As I understand, the leaker responsible has said that he now thinks it will still be out in 2024, which is a relief as I was intending very much to get it. In fact, I intend to sell my PlayStation 5 in order to pay for it.
I’ve seen a lot of negativity about the PS5 Pro over the last few months, in terms of it being unnecessary and too soon, even though this is exactly the same time that the PS4 Pro was released in comparison to the PlayStation 4.
I realise that Sony’s release schedule has ground to a halt lately but whether or not they release the PS5 Pro has nothing to do with that, it’s not like the same people are working on the games and the consoles and they can only make one at a time.
The real reason I’ve written in though is that I reject the argument that the PS5 Pro is not necessary or that it enabling better graphics is a waste of time or effort. I don’t want to get into a graphics vs. gameplay argument but I reject the idea that graphics aren’t important.
Sure, the gameplay has to be good but not only can good graphics elevate a mediocre game, making it enjoyable when it wouldn’t otherwise be, but a game with both good gameplay and good graphics is the ideal we should always be striving for.
This is all only in my opinion, of course, but I don’t like the idea pedalled by some people, that graphics are a minor concern. I can agree they shouldn’t take precedent but they aren’t irrelevant, especially not in the modern era where people expect a certain level of presentation. And especially not when things like exploring open worlds depends on them look realistic and interesting. Nobody is going to be interested in exploring a bland, boring looking landscape.
That said, I’m as turned off by the hardcore PC fans that go into ultra detail about everything – the sort of people that make Digital Foundry seem like amateurs – but that’s exactly why I want a PS5 Pro. Then I don’t have to worry about fine-tuning my settings or upgrading my motherboard. I want good graphics but I also want an easy life.
I don’t feel ashamed that the graphics are one of the first things I think of with a new game and if they’re not great – assuming it’s not an indie game – it does put me off a game. We’re at a point now, with the quality of the games, that we should expect them to both look great and play great, and I don’t think that’s unreasonable.
I’m not going to say that Horizon Forbidden West or The Order: 1886 are the best games ever because they have great graphics, but I do feel that their quality of presentation is something that all games should aspire to and that the best games are those that excel in all areas.
And the more powerful a console is, the easier it is to do amazing graphics, without the developer having to spend all their time and effort on them. PS5 Pro would improve the gameplay too because it would make amazing graphics easier for creators and I think that is a very desirable thing.
