Brandon Blackstock, the former husband of Kelly Clarkson, traded Hollywood for the quiet expanse of Montana in the years before his death at 48. The onetime music manager left Los Angeles behind to live as a rancher and rodeo founder, building a new life on a sprawling $1.8 million property while privately battling cancer.

According to real estate records obtained by the US Sun, Blackstock bought his four-bedroom, three-bath ranch in Butte, Montana, in April 2022 for $1.8 million. The home sits on more than 41 acres and was described by listing agents as “very private and serene.” It features massive ceilings, panoramic mountain views, and open spaces ideal for livestock operations.

From the property, Blackstock ran his companies — V Bar V Cattle Co. and Valley View Livestock — and also founded Valley View Rodeo in Bozeman. The wide-open setting allowed him to step away from the high-pressure entertainment world and immerse himself in ranch work.

In the weeks before his death, his eldest daughter, Savannah, 23, visited the ranch and shared candid family photos online. Blackstock was also father to River, 11, and Remington, 9, with Clarkson, and to Savannah and Seth from his first marriage to Melissa Ashworth. He was a grandfather to Savannah’s son and had another grandchild on the way.

Kelly Clarkson’s Ex Spent His Final Years Out of the Spotlight

Before his retreat to Montana, Blackstock had a high-profile career in the music industry. Working alongside his father, Narvel Blackstock, he managed artists including Blake Shelton and produced for “The Kelly Clarkson Show.” He was also the former stepson of country icon Reba McEntire, maintaining a close relationship with her after her 2015 divorce from Narvel.

Clarkson filed for divorce in June 2020, with the split finalized two years later following disputes over property — including her $10 million “Vintage Valley” ranch. After she won the property in court, Blackstock moved to his own Butte ranch.

Blackstock’s cancer diagnosis remained private until his death on August 7. His family confirmed the news in a statement to CNN:

“It is with great sadness that we share the news that Brandon Blackstock has passed away. Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years. He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family. We thank you for your thoughts and prayers and ask everyone to respect the family’s privacy during this very difficult time.”

TMZ reported he was fighting melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer, and Page Six noted that he was in hospice care before his passing. A source told Page Six, “It’s been exhausting and so sad. Kelly has been working so hard, as well as looking after Brandon. Despite their difficult divorce, he’s still the man she loved and still her kids’ father.”

Just one day before his death, Clarkson canceled her Las Vegas residency dates to be with their children. “While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children’s father has been ill and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them,” she told fans.
