Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arawkawa’s final autopsies were released, both giving more detail on their deaths.

For Arakawa, her cause of death was determined to be Hanta Pulmonary Syndrome, which is a respiratory illness caused by hantaviruses, which are viruses that are primarily transmitted by rodents.

On April 29, the Associated Press revealed that Arakawa had “fluid accumulation in her chest and mild hardening of the vessels that supplied blood to the heart and body, according to the autopsy reports.”

City of Santa Fe Fire Department Chief Brian Moya speaks during a press conference at the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office to provide an update on the investigation into the deaths of actor Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa on February 28, 2025 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

In a report obtained by TMZ on April 14, the New Mexico Department of Public Health found that there were dead rodents, droppings, and nests in eight buildings along the couple’s Santa Fe property. While the primary residence was deemed safe with no signs of rodent activity, it was discovered in three garages, two casitas, and three sheds on their property.

While Arakawa tested positive for hantaviruses, Gene Hackman tested negative according to his autopsy.

Fox News Digital obtained a copy of his final autopsy from the Office of the Medical Investigator in New Mexico, which explained that Hackman had a “history of congestive heart failure” along with “severe chronic hypertensive changes, kidneys.”

Hackman was also found to be in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Because of that, the actor might not have been aware that his wife had died a week before he passed away.

They also found that Arakawa sent an email on February 11 that read, “Hi Katia, So, G woke up today with flu/cold-like symptoms, did a covid test, negative. But out of abundance of caution, I should cancel my appt tomorrow and rebook, say, in a couple of weeks, last week of Feb if something is available. Thank you! Best, B.”

Following the email, “she never opened or sent additional e-mails” after Feb. 11, the report added, also revealing that they found she “purchased several Boost Oxygen canisters” on Amazon.
