Karen Gillan has declared her latest project Douglas is Cancelled presented her with her favourite role to date.
The Scottish actress, 36, is best known for playing Doctor Who companion Amy Pond from 2010 until 2013 alongside Matt Smith, and Nebula in several Marvel Cinematic Universe superhero films including Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Endgame.
However, in the new ITV series Douglas is Cancelled, she plays news presenter Madeleine Crow, whose co-star Douglas Bellows faces a possible career-ending mistake after apparently being caught making a sexist joke at a wedding.
At a recent Q & A for the four-part series, which was created by Steven Moffat (Doctor Who, Sherlock), Karen said it had ‘truly been the hardest thing I’ve ever done because she’s quite removed from who I am as a person so it required a fair amount of acting’.
‘I don’t think I could ever wrap someone round my finger in the way she is capable of doing.’

In May 2022, Gillan married Nick Kocher, an American comedian, in a ceremony at Castle Toward in Dunoon, Scotland.
However, the details weren’t revealed publicly until nearly a year later, when photographs from the special day were released on social media.
Alongside a carousel of photos she uploaded to Instagram, including a gorgeous one of herself in her bridal dress, Karen wrote: ‘Last May…’

The former Doctor Who favourite, who relocated to Los Angeles in 2012, wore a corseted white gown with a flowing train for the wedding, with matching white heels and a delicate diamante strap.
In one snap she was seen posing looking over her shoulder in the impressive indoor surroundings of the venue.
Meanwhile Nick wore traditional Scottish garb with a kilt and sporran in a nod to his bride’s heritage.
Nick is known for his writing work on Saturday Night Live and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, as well as his stand-up double act BriTANicK with Brian Joseph McElhaney.

In November 2022, eagle-eyed fans spotted Karen wearing an emerald and diamond ring on her left hand, however she never confirmed her engagement.
Although she hasn’t spoken about the duration of her relationship with Nick, they first began attending events with one another in 2019.
Last year the actress revealed she made the first move, sliding into his DMs on Instagram.
During an appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark, Karen explained how Nick had ‘popped up’ on her recommended friends list.
‘The algorithm is tearing the country apart, but it brought me together with my guy,’ she quipped.

However, she did have to follow up with him on Twitter after he failed to respond to her opening message on Instagram.
Last year Karen also gave fans an insight into her relationship, sharing a hilarious post about a forgotten couple’s therapy session, in which she joined the online meeting in full makeup for her Guardians of the Galaxy role as Nebula, an alien with blue skin.
‘In honour of Guardians of the Galaxy in theaters Friday, here’s a screenshot of the time I forgot I had scheduled a COUPLES THERAPY session on a day we were shooting,’ she wrote alongside the image, which showed her neck and head covered in various shades of blue.
In 2022 Karen and Nick also co-starred in the Judd Apatow film The Bubble together.

Karen has been quite private about her relationships, largely choosing to keep her personal life private.
However, she was previously in a relationship with photographer Patrick Green for six years.
Although she was once linked to her Doctor Who co-star Matt, he once shut down the rumours, saying: ‘Absolutely not, we’re professionals.’
Douglas is Cancelled starts tonight at 9pm on ITV1. All four episodes are now streaming on ITVX.
