Malcolm-Jamal Warner created a happy, private life in Atlanta, Georgia in the years before his passing. â… he really was like âI’m going to live each day. I understand this is a blessing,ââ a family friend shared with People.Â
The source said that the actor âhad a passion for life,â which he shared with those close to him, adding, â… he was a people person, even though he was very personal with his private life.â
Warner tragically drowned on July 20 while on vacation in Costa Rica with his family. He was just 54 years old.
Warnerâs Creative Pursuits
Warner was a talented actor, known by many for his role as Theo Huxtable on âThe Cosby Showâ but he had many other creative outlets as well. He was a musician who played bass in an Atlanta jazz band called Biological Misfits. He was also a poet who had a passion for spoken-word poetry.Â
The source told People that Warnerâs stint on âThe Cosby Showâ âdid not define himâ but it was a foundational experience for the actor: âHe understood the importance of that show and the characters of a Black family. I think it grounded him in that family environment.â
Warnerâs family friend also spoke about his other acting experiences, and the professionalism that Warner brought to his work. “… you never heard about a scandal,â the source said. âBut even if there was, we didn’t care because we all knew he was just a good brother. He was one of the good ones.”
Warnerâs Family Life
In addition to his undeniable talent, Warner was also a loving husband and father. He chose to keep his daughter out of the public eye, but spoke about his love for her at length.
In 2020 Warner posted an adorable selfie on Facebook with his little girl and captioned it, âYou have absolutely no idea. A love so profound that even a poet canât find the words to describe it.â
Warner was extremely close with his mother as well. While she lived in California and Warner had made a home in Georgia, the two were very tight-knit. âShe was a mother, but she was also his best friend,â the source explained.
And according to the source, Warner was reliable and not one to let his relationships fall by the wayside: âHe was not one of these people that you call and don’t hear back. He was just very respectful.”
