Inside Martha Stewart’s Cooking Empire

Martha Stewart isn’t just a cookbook author or a decorating queen—she’s a multi-hyphenated powerhouse who turned homemaking into a big-time business.

As per an Investopedia report, with an estimated net worth of $400 million, Martha has built an empire that’s equal parts DIY know-how, media savvy, and old-school hustle.

From babysitting Yankee legends and modeling for Chanel to becoming the queen of good taste (and good margins), Martha built her name—and bank—one perfectly folded napkin at a time.

Here’s a deep dive into her empire.

From Babysitting Yankees Kids to Modeling for Chanel

Before she became a household name, Stewart was juggling babysitting gigs for New York Yankees legends and modeling on the side. She even appeared in ads for brands like Lifebuoy soap and modeled for Chanel to pay her way through college. “I knew I was good enough to get $60 an hour,” she once said, reflecting on her modeling days.

Her First Real Job? Stockbroker

In 1967, Stewart became a stockbroker. After moving to Connecticut with her husband, Andrew Stewart, she restored a historic farmhouse—an early preview of her now-signature style.

She soon launched a catering business, opened a gourmet shop, and began building a brand long before influencer culture was established.

Cookbooks Launched Her Career

A catering gig led her to Alan Mirken of Crown Publishing, who greenlit her first book, Entertaining, in 1982. It became a bestseller—and the first of more than 90 books she’s released since. From pies to weddings to organizing hacks, Stewart’s books became must-haves for homemakers everywhere.

In 1990, Martha Stewart Living debuted as a magazine, followed by a TV show of the same name. It ran until 2004 and helped launch Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, her media and product empire.

From Billionaire to Comeback Queen

In 2000, Forbes pegged her net worth at $1 billion. But after her 2004 insider trading conviction, that number dropped.

Today, she’s back on top—with a $400 million fortune and one of the most remarkable comebacks in media history.

Product Lines, TV Shows, and… Snoop Dogg

Stewart’s brand has included everything from Kmart dishware to QVC collections, craft kits at Michaels, and even a meal delivery service.

Her unexpected friendship with Snoop Dogg led to a hit cooking show, Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party, Super Bowl ads, and even a role as a cannabis brand advisor.

Real Estate Queen, Too

Stewart owns stunning properties, including a massive estate in Katonah, NY; a historic Maine home built for the Ford family; and a former West Village apartment sold by her daughter for $31 million.

Her most iconic property may still be Turkey Hill, the Connecticut farmhouse she purchased in the 1970s and later sold for $6.7 million.
