Isla Fisher Says She Is “So Heartbroken” After Sophie Kinsella’s Death at 55

Isla Fisher is grieving the death of Sophie Kinsella, the beloved author of the “Shopaholic” series. Kinsella, born Madeleine Sophie Wickham, died earlier today at 55 after battling an aggressive form of brain cancer.

Fisher portrayed Rebecca Bloomwood in the 2009 film “Confessions of a Shopaholic,” adapted from Kinsella’s first two novels. On Instagram Stories, the actress shared a photo from the movie’s 2009 premiere with Kinsella and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, along with a heartfelt tribute.

“Dear Sophie,” she wrote. “You conjured Rebecca Bloomwood, a hilarious, flawed dream of a comic character — and I was lucky enough to step into her shoes and speak your witty & brilliant words.”


Actress Says Her Children Grew Up on Kinsella’s Books

Fisher also spoke about the impact Kinsella’s work had on her own family. She noted that her two daughters, whom she shares with ex-husband Sacha Baron Cohen, grew up listening to Kinsella’s stories and still cherish them.

“My daughters grew up being read your books and love them to this day. My heart is broken,” she wrote.

“You are still my hero, and I’m grateful for you. And though we won’t meet again, your light and magic lives on in your incredible characters,” she added.

Fisher posted a “Confessions of a Shopaholic” movie poster as well and wrote, “I’m so heartbroken that you are gone.”


Family Confirms Sophie’s Peaceful Passing

News of Kinsella’s death was shared by her husband, Henry Wickham, and their five children through a statement posted on her social media accounts.

“We are heartbroken to announce the passing this morning of our beloved Sophie (aka Maddy, aka Mummy),” the statement read.

“She died peacefully, with her final days filled with her true loves: family, music, warmth, Christmas, and joy.”

They added, “We can’t imagine what life will be like without her radiance and love of life. Despite her illness, which she bore with unimaginable courage, Sophie counted herself truly blessed – to have such a wonderful family and friends, and to have had the extraordinary success of her writing career. She took nothing for granted and was forever grateful for the love she received. She will be missed so much our hearts are breaking.”


The Shopaholic Legacy & Its Lasting Cultural Impact

Kinsella published 10 novels in the “Shopaholic” series between 2000 and 2019. The first two installments, “The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic” and “Shopaholic Abroad,” became the basis for the 2009 film starring Fisher and Hugh Dancy. The movie, directed by P.J. Hogan, also featured Joan Cusack, John Lithgow and John Goodman.

While early reviews were mixed, “Confessions of a Shopaholic” went on to earn nearly $110 million worldwide and later developed a cult following.

The film also marked a defining moment in Fisher’s career, reinforcing her rise after roles in “Wedding Crashers” and “Wedding Daze.”
