It Took a Crazy Incentive for Jaclyn Smith to Appear on ‘The Love Boat’

Jaclyn Smith is undoubtedly most well known for her role playing the beautiful and formidable Kelly Garrett in the television series ‘Charlie’s Angels’ between 1976 and 1981. But in 1977, she appeared in a single episode of another popular show.

That show was the romantic comedy-drama series ‘The Love Boat,’ and Smith played Janette Bradford in “A Tasteful Affair,” one of three stories in the second episode of season 1.

However, it has now been revealed that Smith initially had no interest in appearing on the ABC show — and, given how in-demand she was at the time, it took a very elaborate incentive to get her to do so.

Her Favorite Car Sealed the Deal

As per Remind Magazine, producer Aaron Spelling persuaded Jaclyn Smith to appear on ‘The Love Boat’ by gifting the star her favorite car, a green Jaguar.

Speaking to the publication, Ted Lange, who played the eponymous ship’s much-loved bartender Isaac Washington, said, “Sometimes in order to get a big star on the show, Aaron had to be very generous. Jackie Smith from Charlie’s Angels — she didn’t want to do our show. So, Aaron says ‘What’s your favorite car?’ She says ‘Jaguar. Green.’ She got a Jaguar! Green!”

This week’s episode of The CW’s docuseries ‘TV We Love’ will explore behind-the-scenes stories from ‘The Love Boat,’ and will feature insights from cast, crew, and pop culture historians. It will touch upon Smith’s appearance on the show in more detail. It will air tonight, Monday, October 27, at 8 p.m. EST.

Jaclyn Smith is now 80 years old, still working, and, quite frankly, looking as glamorous as ever!

Her most recent on-screen role was as a character called Delia, a woman with terminal cancer, in a 2025 episode of ‘Doctor Odyssey’ titled “Sophisticated Ladies Week.”

Per IMDb, as well as her roles on ‘Charlie’s Angels’ and ‘The Love Boat,’ her past television credits include ‘The Partridge Family,’ ‘McCloud,’ ‘Hope & Faith,’ ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,’ ‘CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,’ and ‘All American.’

Her movie credits include 1970’s epic drama movie ‘The Adventurers,’ 1974’s comedy-drama ‘Bootleggers,’ 1980’s psychological thriller ‘Nightkill,’ 1985’s drama ‘Déjà Vu,’ and, of course, 2003’s action comedy ‘Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle’ and 2019’s ‘Charlie’s Angels.’ In both of the latter two films, she cameoed as Garrett, her character from the original TV version of ‘Charlie’s Angels.’

Hopefully, Smith will continue to appear on screen for many years to come.
