Red Eye is back for a second season, with Richard Armitage swapped out for Martin Compston, but the bonkers thrills still intact.

The show first hit screens in 2024, with a Hijack-style premise that added a dash of espionage to this pacy six-parter.

Jing Lusi is back for the second outing as DS Hana Li, facing down another slightly farcical premise.

It’s 18 months on from a fledgling international crisis: a new cargo plane was shot down over the Atlantic, with all fingers pointing to – select the nefarious villains of choice from the roster of options – Russia. A real Russian roulette.

Now, DS Hana is called upon to investigate the shady murder of an American diplomatic courier at Heathrow – so there’s still the tangential involvement of planes. The case soon takes her to the US Embassy, where the special relationship is going sour.

The US ambassador, Ronald Tilman, is described as a businessman – who might this remind us of? – and loves to host a good time at the official digs, that is until it becomes clear that the killer has infiltrated the building.

What unfolds is a locked door mystery a la Agatha Christie’s bread and butter. Hana, alongside the embassy security chief Clay Brody (Compston) are on the hunt.

Except, wait, they have history together! It might be a bit silly, but the ITV show stays slick – as viewers who have already tuned in confirmed.

Taking to X Gee said they were already ‘hooked’, writing: ‘Christmas TV was s**** but Red Eye has made up for it.’

Brittany agreed, tweeting: ‘I thought it couldn’t get better than Richard Armitage, but Martin Compston? Wow.’

‘Smooth execution, slightly ropey script, don’t be too critical and it is fine’ (Picture: Laurence Cendrowicz/Bad Wolf/Sony Pictures Television)

Over on IMDb, Nigel said the second season was a decent effort, even if it does defy belief at points. ‘It has a few twists and it was not too obvious,’ he wrote, before quipping: ‘It is amusing how amateur the secret services are.’

He added: ‘The second season is even more of a stretch, they have so shoehorned in all the characters from the last one which was so contrived it added a humour element, but basically the same.

Red Eye is available to watch on ITV1 and ITVX.
