DC Studios released James Gunn’s “Superman” in movie theaters in July 2025, starring David Corenswet as the beloved superhero. Now, Gunn is opening up about why this was the most challenging movie he’s ever made and giving an update on the upcoming sequel.Â
Gunn spoke to Variety in January 2025. During the discussion, he was asked why he considered “Superman” the most challenging movie of his career.
He responded, “This was the hardest movie Iâve ever made. The next hardest was probably the first âGuardians.â With âGuardians,â you were building a corner of the universe that felt completely different from everything else Marvel was doing at the time.Â
Here, I was reorienting something everyone already thinks they understand. Strangely, itâs the most comic-book-driven thing Iâve ever done. More than any of my other superhero films.”
The outlet then asked Gunn how the movie’s creative team shaped it. He said, “Iâve worked with many of these people for years. Beth Mickel, my production designer, has been with me on the last three films.
Steph Ceretti has overseen visual effects for multiple projects now. Being in charge of DC meant I could finally keep the team together instead of losing people between films. That continuity matters.”
James Gunn Also Discussed the ‘Superman’ Sequel
GettyGunn’s conversation with Variety continued, and he was asked about the upcoming sequel to “Superman,” “Man of Tomorrow.” Specifically, the interviewer asked what the movie was about.
According to him, “At its core, itâs about Clark and Lex. I relate to both of them. I relate to Lexâs ambition and obsession â minus the murder. And I relate to Supermanâs belief in people, his Midwestern values. Theyâre two sides of me.”
Gunn first announced “Man of Tomorrow” in September 2025. He also stated that the movie would arrive in movie theaters on July 9, 2027. Before the announcement, Gunn spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the then-untitled movie.
He said, “Iâve already finished the treatment for the next story in what Iâll call the âSuperman Saga. Iâm working on that and hopefully going into production on that not too far away from today.”
The 2025 Movie Marked a Return to Form
There had not been a “Superman” movie since 2016, so there was great interest when the 2025 version came out. Currently, the film holds a healthy 83% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience score for the movie is even better at 90%.Â
According to Box Office Mojo, the movie has grossed over $600 million worldwide. While many would have loved to have seen it make a billion, it was one of the most successful movies of 2025.
