Jason Kelce and Travis Kelce are getting into the Thanksgiving spirit â and stirring up debate in the process. The NFL brothers shared a bonus holiday episode of their podcast âNew Heightsâ on November 21, and it didnât take long before they agreed on a controversial food opinion that has fans talking.
While most Americans consider turkey the centerpiece of the table, the Kelce brothers say it doesnât deserve the spotlight, agreeing with a caller that it’s the âworstâ dish of the holiday. The playful episode quickly turned into a mix of family stories, kitchen confessions, and Thanksgiving traditions that fans found both relatable and hilarious â all while Travis prepares to take the field with the Kansas City Chiefs on Thanksgiving Day.
Jason & Travis Kelce ‘Purposely Never Had Turkey’
During the episode, a caller kicked off the discussion by declaring, âI would like to give an extreme hot take cause âtis the damn season. And that is that turkey is one of the worst dishes on Thanksgiving of all time.â Jason immediately jumped in with, âHard agree,â while the caller continued, âItâs so dry, and people who like it just are weird.â
Jason explained why the traditional turkey never made it to their family table, saying, âWe purposely never had turkey. Mom would make pork chops or some other meat. I love most other things about Thanksgiving fare. Iâm a big mashed potatoes guy. Iâm a big corn guy.â
He also praised the cooks in his life, saying, âKylie makes green bean casserole, (expletive) love that dish. Mama Kelceâs dinner rolls, like everything else about Thanksgiving, are so fantastic. And then it gets kinda muddled down for the most part. The way most people make it, a dry a bird, you gotta slather gravy and cranberry sauce on to redeem anything about it.â
Travis added his own take, joking, âYou gotta fry it, or you gotta be in that non-stop injecting it with, like, it.â His brother cut him off with a laughing correction: âYou gotta fry it, or you gotta (expletive) spatchck that sucker.â
Jason Kelce Shares Holiday Plans, Family Traditions & Favorite Sides
Jason also revealed his favorite Thanksgiving side dish, naming green bean casserole as his top pick. Travis disagreed, choosing mac and cheese instead, prompting Jason to tease him.
âI’ll go one step further, and [say] the mac and cheese is the most overrated side item,â Jason said. âI’m not a big mac and cheese guy. Travis has always been a big mac and cheese guy.â
Jason also explained that he fries the turkey each year, even though his wife doesnât eat it. âAnd Kylie doesn’t even eat that, so I pretty much make a turkey for myself,â he joked.
Speaking to People, while promoting his fragrance Slow Burn by Kingsford, Jason shared more about who handles the cooking.
âFor Thanksgiving, Kylie and her mom do the majority of the cooking. [My] mom comes over, she does her dinner rolls that she’s made since we were kids, and then the past couple years, I’ve been frying a turkey,â he said, admitting turkey still isnât his first choice. âI don’t like turkey that much⦠smoked isn’t bad, especially if it’s like a spatchcocked Turkey.â
The former Philadelphia Eagles center also said he hopes to build new family traditions with his daughters Wyatt, Elliotte, Bennett, and baby Finn. One tradition he hopes to solidify is cutting down and decorating the Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving, adding, âThat’s what I want to do. We haven’t done it yet.â
As for Travis Kelce, heâll be spending his Thanksgiving on the field as the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Dallas Cowboys in one of the most anticipated matchups of the week.
