On July 17, CBS stunned the entertainment industry by announcing that “The Late Show” with Stephen Colbert will officially end in 2026. The network, citing financial reasons, will become the first major broadcaster to exit the late-night space. This comes after viewership trends continue to shift toward streaming.
The news sent shockwaves through the comedy world, leaving both fans and fellow hosts rattledânone more so than Jimmy Fallon, who addressed the cancellation on his Instagram Stories.
âIâm Just as Shocked as Everyone,â Says Fallon

Fallon, host of NBCâs “The Tonight Show”, shared his candid reaction to Colbertâs exit. âIâm just as shocked as everyone,â Fallon wrote on Instagram. âStephen is one of the sharpest, funniest hosts to ever do it. I really thought Iâd ride this out with him for years to come. Iâm sad that my family and friends will need a new show to watch every night at 11:30.â

He continued by honoring Colbertâs character and career: âBut honestly, heâs really been a gentleman and a true friend over the years â going back to The Colbert Report. Iâm sure whatever he does next will be just as brilliant.â
Whatâs Next for Stephen Colbert?

While “The Late Show” is set to run through May 2026, fans are already speculating about Colbertâs next chapter.
With Jon Stewartâs return to “The Daily Show” setting a precedent, some are wondering if Colbert could bring back The Colbert Report, the satirical series that cemented his status as a late-night icon.
Adding fuel to the speculation, Colbert will reunite with his Strangers With Candy co-stars Amy Sedaris & Paul Dinello this November at the New York Comedy Festival to mark the showâs 25th anniversary. A reboot isnât off the table.
Is âThe Daily Showâ next to face the chopping block?

Jon Stewart addressed the speculation that his late-night Comedy Central talk show might be canceled as the networkâs parent company, Paramount Global, prepares to merge with Skydance Media.
âBoy, thatâs a good question,â Stewart, 62, said during âThe Weekly Showâ podcast on Thursday, July 17. âUnfortunately, we havenât heard anything from them. They havenât called me and said like, âDonât get too comfortable in that office, Stewart!’ââBut let me tell you something: Iâve been kicked out of sâ-ier establishments than that,â he added. âWeâll land on our feet.â
However, Stewart also noted that the show could avoid potential cancellation because it is one of Comedy Centralâs most popular programs.
For now, you can stream the two-time Emmy-nominated “The Late Show” now on CBS or Paramount+.
