Johnny Depp Looks Unrecognizable as He Films ‘Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol’

Johnny Depp was recently photographed on set of â€œEbenezer: A Christmas Carol,” the upcoming adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic story, looking almost unrecognizable in full period costume as Ebenezer Scrooge while filming in the United Kingdom.

The images, shared widely on social media, reveal Depp fully immersed in the Victorian era makeup and wardrobe that transform him into the iconic miser, complete with era-appropriate coat, hat and rugged accessories that make him nearly unrecognizable to even seasoned fans.

The production’s early photos also show him working alongside co-star Andrea Riseborough, who is part of the ensemble cast bringing this latest iteration of â€œA Christmas Carol” to life, according to the Daily Mail.

This marks one of Depp’s most visually dramatic transformations in recent years — a nod to his longtime reputation for choosing bold, character-driven roles throughout his career.

What We Know About Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol

The film — directed by Ti West of â€œX,” â€œPearl” and â€œMaXXXine” fame — is a new film adaptation of Charles Dickens’ beloved 1843 novella â€œA Christmas Carol” and is being produced by Paramount Pictures.

In this version, Depp takes on the central role of the curmudgeonly Scrooge, a man confronted by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come, as he grapples with his own past misdeeds and seeks redemption.

Scheduled for release on Nov. 13, 2026, â€œEbenezer: A Christmas Carol” promises to deliver a distinctive reimagining of Dickens’ timeless story, blending elements of supernatural drama gothic storytelling in the heart of Dickensian London.

Depp’s casting is notable not just for the iconic nature of the character, but because the film represents his first major Hollywood studio project since his widely covered defamation trial and subsequent return to film following roles such as the French drama â€œJeanne du Barry” and his upcoming thriller â€œDay Drinker.”

The film already has a star studded cast attached it to, according to IMDb.

The ensemble cast surrounding Depp continues to grow, with actors such as Ian McKellen and Tramell Tillman confirmed in key supporting roles, and additional members like Rupert Grint, Daisy Ridley, Sam Claflin, Charlie Murphy, Arthur Conti and Ellie Bamber also attached to the project, giving the film a broad pool of talent.

Andrea Riseborough’s role in the film remains under wraps, though speculation among fans and industry watchers suggests she could portray one of the pivotal spirits or another key figure from Dickens’ allegorical world.

A Classic Reimagined for Modern Audiences

The story of â€œA Christmas Carol” has been retold countless times on screen — from animated adaptations to more traditional live-action versions — but this take appears poised to deliver something uniquely atmospheric and moody, thanks to West’s directorial sensibilities and Depp’s commitment to character immersion.

As production continues in the UK and more set photos circulate, anticipation is building not only for Depp’s performance but for how this fresh iteration of â€œA Christmas Carol” will balance its gothic elements with the timeless message of redemption that has captivated audiences for generations.
