Jonathan Bailey has shared how he chose the perfect prosthetic penis while filming Fellow Travelers.

The American political romance series, available to watch on Paramount Plus, follows two men who meet during the height of McCarthyism in the 1950s – Hawkins ‘Hawk’ Fuller (Matt Bomer), a closeted World War II veteran and State Department official, and Tim Laughlin (Bailey), a congressional staffer.

When starring in the show, Bailey has a hand in selecting the fake penis we would see onscreen – and he devised the ideal way to pick one.

‘They’ve all got their different personalities,’ he said, speaking about the props. ‘When you’re approaching character you think emotionally, cerebrally, and then you have to really make a big choice.’

During an interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers, the host cheekily asked ‘Is that what you did? You made the big choice?’

‘No, no, no!’ the Bridgerton star continued. ‘I think it’s only fair — I believe in representation for everyone.’

He then went on to show a series of censored images of the phalluses, before giving a shoutout to the staff on the show, in particular one team member who made him laugh with a particular prosthetic prank.

‘On the last day Beth, my amazing wardrobe assistant, cheered me up,’ he said before unveiling a photo that showed his nude protective layer used on set she had added two googly eyes to and Tim’s prosthetic penis for its nose.

He then revealed that when he got home, he found the nude protective layer in his suitcase with the googly eyes still attached, but the prosthetic penis removed.

The Wicked actor recently opened up on Fellow Travelers, explaining why the role was a ‘punk’ choice.

Sharing why he accepted the role, Bailey said: ‘I heard that Ron [Nyswanner] was going to be investigating and exploring 40 years of queer life and experience. But at that time, it looked like I might not be available.’

‘I pursued it. And after doing something like Bridgerton, it felt important to me to find something rich and complex,’ he told The Hollywood Reporter.

‘There’s nothing more of a gift than to be able to educate yourself, and also in the investigation and in the performance of it, to live a really dangerous life, but within safety, and, ultimately, write this love letter to those that came before us. I was enchanted by the idea, and there was no part of me that didn’t think it was the punkest thing to do.’

He additionally told Virgin Radio: ‘I had looked for these gay stories, a sweeping gay love story, and I hadn’t really seen them. Fellow Travelers ticked every single box, and it’s something I know I’ll be proud of for the rest of my career.’

Bomer added: ‘There are young people who see themselves in the story. I thought they would mostly see themselves in Skippy, but they’ve also seen themselves in Hawk and other characters in the story.’
