Julia Roberts took the audience by surprise on Monday night at the 35th Annual Gotham Film Awards by presenting them with one of her hidden talents while on stage with legendary Italian director, Luca Guadagnino.

Roberts & Guadagnino Team up in ‘After the Hunt’

The official synopsis for Guadagnino’s newest thriller reads, “‘After the Hunt’ is a gripping psychological drama about a college professor (Roberts) who finds herself at a personal and professional crossroads when a star student (Ayo Edebiri) levels an accusation against one of her colleagues (Andrew Garfield), and a dark secret from her own past threatens to come into the light.”

Also included in this star-studded cast is Chloë Sevigny, who was in his 2022 film “Bones and All,” and Michael Stuhlbarg from his Oscar-winning film “Call Me By Your Name,” which also earned the actor his nomination for “Best Supporting Actor” in the 2018 Critics’ Choice.

“It’s one of those things you long for as an actor — to find a collaboration with someone you have such the highest possible respect for, so that you can explore your own gifts as well and your own limitations and challenges. It’s all I’ve ever really wanted, and it has provided a singular, perpetually resonating gift for me,” Stuhlbarg said of his experience working with Guadagnino on three films during a cast interview with Variety.

When asked how they met, Guadagnino said, “truth of the matter is that this movie started with Julia on a couch in a friend’s house. I got a beautiful script from Nora [Garrett, the screenwriter], and I was going to L.A. to shoot a commercial. And then our agent, Bryan Lourd, wanted us to meet. So there was a party, and we sat on a couch as if I knew you forever.”

Roberts agreed that it felt like they were “soulmates,” a sentiment also shared by Sevigny and Garfield during that same interview.

“After the Hunt” premiered at the Venice Film Festival in August 2025 and was released in October 2025.

Roberts’ Unexpected Talent Surprises Fans

At the Gotham Awards on Monday, December 1, Roberts showed off her skills when translating a speech for Guadagnino, who received the Visionary Award alongside Roberts for their respective work directing and starring in his new film “After the Hunt.”

Guadagnino actually gave his speech in English, so Roberts decided to show off her knack for languages by translating the speech to Italian.

After fellow actor Paul Rudd presented them with the award, Roberts began, “I not only had a great privilege of acting with Luca, but I will be acting as his interpreter,” Julia said while onstage, leading Guadagnino to begin his part of the speech. As the filmmaker continued, Roberts translated what he said into Italian. When he concluded, “thank you Gotham Awards,” she repeated it in Italian.
