The internet is obsessed with Justin Trudeau’s Halloween costume, which appears to be a nod to his sizzling romance with Katy Perry.
Former Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau, 53, and award-winning pop star Perry, 41, have been the talk of social media in recent weeks, having first ignited dating rumours in late July.
Trudeau and Perry then made things official when they stepped out last weekend, holding hands in Paris as they left the Crazy Horse cabaret, where the Roar hitmaker celebrated her birthday.
And now it seems the politician is keen to shout about their relationship from the rooftops, as no one can ignore the glaring KP reference in his shark attire for Halloween.
Taking to Instagram on Friday, Trudeau revealed his outfit alongside some snaps with his 11-year-old son, Hadrien.
Trudeau was dressed as an inflatable shark, while his child was a wounded surfer who had been bitten and was covered in blood.
‘Ready for Halloween with Hadrien: he’s the surfer, I’m the shark (to his left)’, his caption began.
‘We built the costume together — a little father-son Halloween teamwork. 🎃🦈🏄♂️’, he added sweetly.
Of course, the blue shark suit plus his position being ‘to his left’ looks to be referencing the viral Left Shark from Perry’s 2015 Super Bowl halftime show.
The meme has gone down as one of the Super Bowl’s most memorable moments over the past decade, as one of the singer’s backing dancers appeared to forget their choreography and went rogue, thereby creating jokes for days online.
It didn’t take long for people to connect the dots between Trudeau’s Halloween look and Perry’s viral incident, as the comments section of his post was flooded with GIFs from the performance.
‘LEFT SHARK 😍’, commented @danielleannie.
‘Babe we all recognize that shark costume’, wrote @sarahm5607.
‘What a wild timeline to be in’, joked @tanyaninetwo.
Asking the question on everyone’s lips, @kbempringham said: ‘Ok but did you learn the choreo’.
‘This is pretty iconic actually’, declared @beatricepirate.
Trudeau was first spotted out with Perry in summer after dining at Le Violon in Montreal.
Their blossoming romance follows his separation from wife Sophie Grégoire, from whom he split in 2023 and shares three kids: sons Xavier and Hadrien and daughter Ella-Grace.
Meanwhile, Perry and actor Orlando Bloom announced earlier this year that, after much speculation, they had also split. The A-listers began dating in early 2016, and, following a brief split, they reunited and got engaged in 2019.
Perry shares five-year-old daughter Daisy Dove with the Pirates of the Caribbean star, with the little one remaining their priority as they now co-parent amicably.
While she and Trudeau are keeping things pretty low-key for the time being—apart from a cheeky quip onstage about how she’s no longer ‘falling for Englishmen’—it’s said their fresh romance has had a great impact on his happiness in particular.
Speaking to People this week, a source said: ‘Justin has had a lot of upheavals in the past couple of years, both in his professional-political status and at home with the split from Sophie.
‘He is a much happier person now.’
The insider added: ‘Stresses are greatly diminished. And he is intrigued with Katy. They have fun together, laugh a lot, talk about everything.
‘His life is much improved, and his relationship with Katy has had a lot to do with it.’
A Canadian political source also confirmed that the pair are very much an item and ‘they have been seeing each other as often as possible’.
‘Obviously, she’s busy, but so is he. Yet he goes the extra mile to be with her when possible. Especially when it’s important.’
