He spoke to Jimmy Kimmel about his bipolar disorder diagnosis. West noted that he had symptoms as early as age 5, and he was thankful his mother didn’t medicate him young, as he might’ve never fully developed into the person he’s become today. The rapper also explained how he doesn’t have extreme periods of depression like some others with his same mental illness.</p>
<p id=”par-4_104″>“Because I just say it,” West explained. “I’ll say on real TV, like, I thought about killing myself — and then the thought is gone, you know? [People] need to be able to express themselves without fear of judgment. What I love telling people is, like, who do you know — especially black men — I’m 41 years old, and I don’t know anyone who’s f***ed up as much as I have that’s still that successful. So, I want to prove that you can get fat, that you can say the wrong things, you can p*** a whole city off [and still find success].”</p>

However, in 2025, he explained how his wife, Bianca Censori, doesn’t believe he has bipolar disorder. Instead, <a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/news/kanye-west-says-bianca-censori-knew-not-bipolar-disorder-educated.html/”>she believes he’s autistic</a>.</p>
<p id=”par-6_83″>“They call it specifically bipolar. They put that on me. I said it, I put it out,” West explained about his initial diagnosis while speaking to Justin Laboy. “… I went to this doctor, one that worked with Justin Bieber. … I’m not even gonna name the names. My wife took me, because she said, ‘Something about your personality doesn’t feel like it’s bipolar. I’ve seen bipolar before.’ … And come to find out, it’s really a case of autism that I have.”</p>
<p id=”par-7_41″>West explained how autism makes him hyperfixate on one aspect of his personality, especially when fans express dislike. “And that’s my problem when fans tell me to do my album a certain way,” he added. “I’ll do it the opposite way.”</p>
