What if… one of the most common farm animals in Britain suddenly turned on Kate Winslet? Well, turns out she’s already preparing.

The singer and Titanic actress, 49, who recently starred in the 2023 war film Lee, made the admission that the animal she fears most is of the bovine persuasion.

Appearing on The Late Show with host Stephen Colbert, Kate answered several questions, including what her favourite sandwich was, what her first concert was, and whether she preferred apples or oranges.

Amid the humorous questions from Stephen was one about which animal Kate found to be the most terrifying, and she gave an honest answer.

‘I’m honestly not brilliant with cows. Listen, no, okay. Here’s the thing. Someone said to me that you have to learn how to read a field of cows – you have.

‘If they turn, ooh, they’ve gone. If their tails are swishing and flicking and there’s flies, it means they’re not happy. They might charge at you.’

She continued: ‘This is a thing I never knew. I go hiking all the time and regularly footpaths will take you through fields of cows. And I have decided that they are going to stampede me to the ground.

‘There was a time when my mother was alive, and she and I were on a walk, and some cows absolutely were catching up with us. They were slowly Bo-Peeping it, and then they did speed up.’

After saying that the herd of cows following them had ‘a couple of gallopers,’ Kate revealed that she and her mum got out of there safely in the end.

‘There are quite a lot of stories in England of people having very nasty run-ins with cows, very real ones. So I am extremely wary of a field of cows.’

However, she did confess that she needed to get better at dealing with the sight of a field of cows because, ‘You know, they’re not really scary, are they?’

Born and raised in Reading, Berkshire, it’s unlikely that Kate would have spent that much of her childhood around cows – it’s not known exactly when the fear developed.

When asked whether she preferred apples or oranges, she did reveal that her husband Edward Abel Smith can’t bear the sound of people eating apples or chopping them up.

The pair were married in 2012, making Edward Kate’s third husband after she was married to Jim Threapleton (from 1998 to 2001) and Sam Mendes (from 2003 to 2011).

After marrying Edward, the couple did move out to the countryside, purchasing a property in the West Wittering area of Sussex, near Portsmouth.

The couple have two children – their son Bear, 11, who Kate shares with Edward; Joe, 21, whose dad is Sam; and Mia, 26, who was born to the now late Threapleton.
