Kate Winslet’s Iconic 2006 Rom-Com Set to Return as Limited Series

Kate Winslet’s Fan-Favorite 2006 Film Gets Limited Series Reboot

It’s raining sequels, and who doesn’t like a fresh take on a classic rom-com? A fresh spin on the beloved 2006 romantic comedy “The Holiday” is officially in development at Apple TV+, Variety has reported on August 1st. The original Nancy Meyers film starred Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, and Jack Black.

The limited series will revisit the story of two women: one British, one American, who swap homes during the Christmas season and unexpectedly find love. However, the upcoming series will feature new characters instead of the original film’s leads.

Actors Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, and Kate Winslet attend “The Holiday” premiere presented by Columbia Pictures & Universal Pictures at the Ziegfeld Theatre, November 29, 2006, in New York City.

Variety reports that Krissie Ducker will write and executive produce the project. She’s best known for her work on “Killing Eve,” “Sweetpea,” and “The Assassin.” Ducker also previously worked as a writer’s assistant on “Catastrophe,” which Rob Delaney co-created and starred in. Delaney will also contribute to the script.

Left Bank Pictures will produce the series. Nancy Meyers, who wrote, produced, and directed the original film, is not involved in the project.

Casting Underway as Series Awaits Greenlight

Casting is currently underway to find the series’ leads. If the right cast is assembled, Apple TV+ is expected to move forward with a full green light for production.

A Look Back at the Original Film’s Legacy

The 2006 film starred Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, and Jack Black. Winslet played Iris, a London-based journalist, while Diaz portrayed Amanda, a high-powered movie trailer producer in Los Angeles.

The two women swap homes for the holidays and find love across the Atlantic — Iris with Miles (Black), and Amanda with Graham (Law), Iris’ widowed brother.

“The Holiday” was a box office hit, grossing over $200 million worldwide, as per Variety.

Fun Fact: Jude Law Crushed Holiday Dreams With Behind-the-Scenes ‘The Holiday’ Reveal

In a Nov. 24, 2024, interview with BBC Radio, the actor revealed a surprising behind-the-scenes truth about the beloved 2006 Christmas rom-com “The Holiday,” in which he starred alongside Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet.

Law, who played Winslet’s brother and Diaz’s romantic interest in the film, expressed his fondness for the movie’s legacy. “I find it just, honestly, glorious,” he said.

But the magic hit a bump when one of the hosts asked, “You think we could Airbnb that cottage?” — referring to the cozy English countryside home belonging to Winslet’s character, Iris.

“That cottage doesn’t exist,” Law responded, sending the hosts into audible shock. “Oooh, yeah,” he added with a smile.

One interviewer exclaimed, “That’s my dream home!” echoing what many fans have believed for nearly two decades. Law then explained why the picturesque cottage was never REAL.

“So the director, she’s a bit of a perfectionist,” he said, referring to filmmaker Nancy Meyers. “She toured that whole area and didn’t quite find the chocolate box cottage she’s looking for,” he added. “So she just [rented] a field, and drew it and had someone build it.”

The fact that these stories still resonate today proves the lasting popularity of this beloved classic.
