Katie Price has been famous for two decades, and has been able to maintain interest by letting us witness every part of her life.
We’ve seen her fall in love with Peter Andre on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, get married and welcome children in their own reality show, before navigating the breakup in a spin-off. She has documented the difficulties of raising her son Harvey Price, who has complex disabilities, and trying to make her ‘mucky mansion’ into a home again. She’s spoken about suffering with mental health, using drugs to ‘self-medicate’, and going through bankruptcy.
It feels like we’ve seen Katie during the highest highs and lowest lows, but her latest Channel 4 documentary Katie Price: Making Babies shows a whole new level of vulnerability.
Across two episodes, Katie, 46, and then-boyfriend Carl Woods, 35, share their struggles to conceive. Katie is a mum-of-five – as well as Harvey, 22, she also has Junior, 19, and Princess, 17, from her marriage to Peter and Jett, 11, and Bunny, nine with ex-husband Kieran Hayler – but is desperate to add to the brood.
While for many parents the idea of having freedom once more as their kids become adults may be an exciting prospect, however, for Katie, she can’t think of anything worse. In a confessional, she states to the camera: ‘My life isn’t my life without kids around me.’
You can feel her longing through the TV screen, and it quickly becomes evident how far she’ll go to achieve her goal.

Viewers learn that Katie and Carl have already gone through one failed round of IVF, and join them as they embark on a second attempt in 2023.
In an honest chat with a doctor, they are told that there chance of getting pregnant with Katie’s eggs is less than 1%. Carl also admits to using steroids which have impacted his sperm count.
There is a look of sadness in Katie’s eyes, which she fights by announcing that ‘miracles do happen’. This determination to ‘defy the odds’ takes her through multiple hormone injections, blood tests, and scans before having a surgical operation to retrieve eggs. Cameras follow every part of the journey.

She pushes her body to its limits in pursuit of her dream of baby number six. The only genuine smile seems to come when the doctor informs Katie they were able to get two eggs after surgery.
As the episodes unfold no attempt is made to hide the relationship issues between Katie and Carl. The pressure to start a family together clearly weighs on them both and leads to snappy exchanges.
Katie says the quiet bit out loud and communicates her fears that Carl is going to leave her at every opportunity. She seems particularly assured it’s over when learning that menopause is likely to begin for her in two years.

There are some classic Katie-isms, such as her asking why Carl doesn’t ‘frenchie’ her anymore. Rather than provide laughter, they expose Katie’s want to be shown affection. Katie admits that men have always been her downfall and perhaps that could be part of her reason for wanting the unconditional love that children can provide.
I would have liked to see this part of Katie explored more purposefully in the first episode, to help us understand a little more why more children has become the most important thing in her life. While plenty of information is provided on the science, there is little delving into the psychological elements. The show also inadvertently tackles her issues with aging, and it would have been interesting to learn if this is linked to the desire to expand her family.
Katie may be a huge media personality, but this documentary is a stark reminder that she’s only human. Letting us in on this deeply personal experience is a brave decisio and adds another layer to her public image.
