Former “The Bachelorette” star Katie Thurston has shared an update with fans regarding her cancer diagnosis, and everybody is quickly stepping up to shower her with love.
After revealing her treatment plan was temporarily paused due to additional biopsies her doctor wanted, Thurston shared via Instagram that the results were not good. Doctors have now classified her cancer as being stage 4, meaning it has spread.
Katie Thurston’s Cancer Has Spread to Her Liver
On February 15, Thurston shared with Bachelor Nation via an Instagram post that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer.
In recent updates, she revealed that instead of starting treatments on March 28, she had appointments to discuss further concerns. In an Instagram Story, she explained, “Today I would have finally started treatment. But instead I have an appointment to discuss the suspicious spot found on my liver during my PET scan.”
Thurston also posted an update video on Instagram. She noted she was diagnosed 43 days ago, but had not started treatment yet. After having a flurry of tests, and most recently, a liver biopsy, Thurston learned her status.
“Unfortunately, after three days of waiting, I did find out today that my breast cancer has spread to the liver,” Thurston shared.
She continued, “It is fairly small, however, that does put me at stage four.”
Thurston explained, “As of now, my new treatment plan is going to start next Friday. It does involve chemo. I know stage four can sound very scary, and it can be. However, given that I am triple positive and the spots on my liver are fairly small and detected early, I feel very optimistic on my outcome.”
“I’m very confident in the team at Columbia, and I just wanted to share that update,” Thurston said in closing.
She also explained that while she was diagnosed and started her care with Kaiser while living in Los Angeles, they never did a PET scan. It was when she had a PET scan in New York with Columbia that the spots on her liver were found.
Thurston’s News Prompted an Outpouring of Support
The top comment on Thurston’s post came from her new husband, comedian Jeff Arcuri. He wrote, “You’re the strongest woman I know. We got this.” The couple got married on March 22, just ahead of when her treatments were slated to begin.
Fellow former “The Bachelorette” star Kaitlyn Bristowe commented, “Never prayed harder.”
A fan added, “You’ve got this Katie. Someone told me it would be the hardest year of my life, but it will give me back the rest of my life ððªð½ Your positivity will be the backbone of it all, sending so much love!!”
“Thanks for keeping us updated Katie!! Your strength through all of this is so inspiring. You are in my prayers daily, â¤ï¸” another fan wrote.
Some followers who have experienced stage 4 breast cancer themselves or via loved ones left positive notes for Thurston.
“Katie Iâve been stage 4 since 2018!! You will be fine. You have a great team behind you. This is not false positivity itâs the truth,” one fan wrote.
“Stage 4 is not a death sentence. Iâm thriving and living as normal as before. You got this, â¤ï¸â¤ï¸â¤ï¸” added another survivor.
