Ke Huy Quan gets to be a Lego minifigure in new Goonies set

One of the most beloved movies of the 80s is getting its own Lego set and it has the approval of Ke Huy Quan, who played Data in the film.

It’s not only a surprise that there hasn’t been a Lego The Goonies set before, but that Hollywood hasn’t tried to reboot the original 1985 classic. That’s probably a blessing though, especially as it remains as popular now as it’s ever been.

Technically, there was one Goonies set before this, as part of the Lego Dimensions toys to life video game, but that only included a minifigure of Sloth and a couple of mini-builds. This new set is a gigantic 2,912 piece model of not just One-Eyed Willy’s pirate ship but all the various traps that had to be navigated to get there.

The design is based on one created by an ordinary Lego fan, which was voted on by other fans as part of the Lego Ideas website, where the most popular designs get turned into actual retail products, from which the original creator gets a cut of the profits.

The Goonies set is 62cm long and 36cm tall, so it’s massive – as you can see in relation to Ke Huy Quan, who’s demonstrating the set in the video below, on account of him playing Richard ‘Data’ Wang in the film.

Although the back and top of the model recreates the pirate ship from the end of the movie the vignettes in the lower decks are from various scenes from other parts of the film, including the Fratellis’ (the evil family of bad guys) hideaway and the trap-filled cave system leading up to the ship.

There’re boulders that drop down, trapdoors, a playable skeleton organ, ropes to swing on, pipes to balance across, and masts to slide down. There’s even a nod to the deleted scene featuring a giant octopus, as well as little details like Mouth’s hairbrush and Data’s utility belt.

The set includes a total of 12 minifigures, including Data (Ke Huy Quan), Mikey (Sean Astin), Mouth (Corey Feldman), Brand (a young Josh Brolin), Chuck, Andy, Stef, Mama Fratelli, Jake Fratelli, Francis Fratelli, Sloth, and One-Eyed Willy.

Although Lego redesigned the original idea, to make it a viable product, the original was created by Greek fan Vaggelis Nteze, who, apart from everything else, will be featured in the instruction book.

‘In designing this set, I revisited my childhood memories – growing up in the 80s, playing with Lego Pirates sets and watching The Goonies,’ he said. ‘I wanted to build something that offered both playability and display value. I’m thrilled to see it come to life and hope it brings joy to fans old and new.’

The set, number 21363, will be available from November 4, although if you’re a Lego Insider (which requires only a free sign-up) you can get it from November 1.

Like all Lego, especially the licensed sets, it’s not cheap and will cost a cool £269.99 from the Lego website and retail stores.

However, if you buy it between November 1st and 7th you’ll get an exclusive free set called The Goonies: The Walshes’ Attic, which isn’t available any other way.

The gift with purchase, includes a diorama of the attic – obviously – and exclusive minifigures of Mikey’s parents Irving and Irene (complete with Lego plaster cast on her arm).
