Keanu Reeves Has Perfect Reaction to Jonathan Groff Straddling Him at Tony Awards

The crowd watched Jonathan Groff intently as he launched into the songs “Mack the Knife,” “That’s All,” and “Once in a Lifetime” at the 2025 Tony Awards. But he really grabbed everyone’s attention when he came into the crowd and jumped onto Keanu Reeves’ chair. The “John Wick” actor stared up in mock horror as he became a part of the show.

Reeves could’ve had many reactions to his former co-star bringing him into the spotlight. His decision to fully embrace the moment just made us love him even more.

Keanu Reeves Loved It, Throwing up ‘Rock N’ Roll’ Hand Signs

Groff jumped off the stage and quickly spotted Reeves. He jumped onto Reeves’ chair, straddling him, singing “and the only heart I own is for you and you alone.”

“I can only give you country walks in springtime, and a hand to hold when leaves begin to fall,” he continued. He caressed Reeves’ hair and chest while Reeves looked up at him, displaying an exaggerated look of surprise. But as the camera zoomed in, Reeves looked thrilled, making devil horns — the rock n’ roll symbol, with both hands.

Groff was nominated in the Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical category for his role as Bobby Darin in “Just in Time.” He previously told Vogue that he wanted to “break the fourth wall with the audience to create that connection that Bobby was really famous for.” He created that connection at the 2025 Tony Awards.

Groff Has Called Keanu Reeves the ‘Greatest Action Star of Our Time’

Reeves and Groff aren’t strangers; the two co-starred in “The Matrix Resurrections.” Groff played a version of Agent Smith, previously played by Hugo Weaving.

The “Frozen” actor earned the nickname “The Savage” on set because he gave his all to the fight scenes. He admitted to GQ that he was determined to perfect one particular fight sequence. Groff trained more for “The Matrix” than he had for any of his Broadway shows. He wanted to ensure he “could actually be present with one of the greatest action stars of our generation.”

Groff told The Hollywood Reporter that working with Reeves was “an experience I’ll hold in my heart for the rest of my life.”

“It was so exciting to be doing such extraordinary fight choreography with the greatest action star of our time and someone that’s so devoted to their craft,” he said. “I really tried to take in every single moment of getting to be with Keanu and I learned so much from working with him.
