Keanu Reeves Offers an Update on His ‘Banana Cakes’ Knee Injury

Keanu Reeves may primarily be known as an action movie star, however, he also dabbles in other genres. He did just that while working on the comedy “Good Fortune.” Granted, while he was busy trying to make others laugh, he ended up hurting himself.

He opened up about the accident while sitting down for a chat for Jason and Travis Kelce‘s “New Heights” podcast. At one point, Jason asked Keanu, “You’ve done all of these iconic action movies where you’re moving and fighting and running. Is it true that you got hurt doing this last film more than you got hurt in all these other ones?… Is that accurate?”

“Yep,” Keanu replied. “I was doing a scene, and I was going back to the dressing room, which was at a residence, and they had a carpet laid down to protect the owner’s carpet. And then there was a little section, and it caught my foot, and I started to fall, and then I spiked my left knee, and my left patella went like this.”

Showing what happened to his knee by cupping his hand together and then breaking them apart, he added, “My kneecap, I had a vertical break. It didn’t break the top or bottom.”

Travis & Jason Had Never Heard of an Injury Like Keanu Suffered

“A vertical break? I’ve never heard of this,” Travis admitted while talking to Keanu. His brother chimed in to say he had never heard of it either.

When Keanu explained that a vertical break was better than a horizontal break, Jason noted, “Well, that’s good. At least it’s better than a horizontal, but that still sounds pretty messed up.”

Although Keanu offered an update, saying that he didn’t end up needing surgery, he did wear a brace while continuing to work. He also recalled, “Until they pulled the blood out of the capsule, the pain was banana cakes.”

Keanu has opened up about his injured in the past and revealed exactly how he hurt himself.

“I was filming a scene with Aziz Ansari and Seth Rogen and we were in a cold plunge,” Keanu said during an interview on “The Late Show” (via Variety). “I was loving it, I was standing there, and we finish the scene, and you know when you’re cold and you’re [shuffling]? I had a bathing suit and a towel, and you put it over your head and you do the cold shuffle?”

“I’m doing the cold shuffle in this room that had protective carpets down and then, just here, there was like a little pocket, and my foot got caught in the pocket in the shuffle, and then I went [down], but [my knee] didn’t follow,” he continued. “And then, in slow motion, I went falling. My arms came out, but then my knee failed because it’s got some stuff, and I spiked it. And my patella — kneecap — cracked like a potato chip.”

Although the star thought it wasn’t a big deal initially, he added that suddenly his “knee was blowing up.”

Despite the fact that Keanu has been in plenty of action movies which could have seen him hurt, he added, “Comedy’s hard, man.”
