For every action film (Patriots Day), drama (A Few Good Men), and comedy (Footloose) Kevin Bacon has made, it feels like he’s made twice as many horror films. The good thing about this ratio is that those seem to be the movies everyone wants to see him in. Friday the 13th, Tremors, MaXXXine, and Stir of Echoes are not just popular with viewers but critics. With his new series, The Bondsman, he’s taking his love of horror to the television, believing it has something everyone can enjoy.
Bacon’s Thoughts on Horror Movie Experiences
âWhen I started first experiencing horror, every time I would do it, it would be in the company of a bunch of people in a dark room in a movie theater,” Bacon told Bloody Disgusting. “And when you share that experience of everybody going, âAh!â They jump at something, and then right afterwards they laugh at the fact that they all collectively jumped at that thing.”
âI find that a horror movie or a really funny comedy are the two genres that can really bind an audience as one organism,” he continued. The Bondsman is a unique combination of humor and horror. Bacon may have found the perfect project to bring people together.
In The Bondsman, Bacon plays Hub Halloran, a Georgia bail enforcer who is murdered while trying to capture a fugitive. Midge (Jolene Purdy) from the Pot O’Gold company informs him that he went to hell and that Satan brought him back to capture demons. If he fails, he’ll be sent back. With the help of his mother, Kitty (Beth Grant), Hub begins his new job and, hopefully, his quest towards redemption.
Bacon Collaborates with Grammy Winner to Create the Music
Along with Bacon, Grant, and Purdy, Jennifer Nettles plays Maryanne, Hub’s ex-wife. Nettles is also one-half of the Grammy-winning duo Sugarland. Bacon, also a musician, was thrilled to have her join the cast. âI feel lucky to get a chance to sing with her, basically,â Bacon told USA Today. âShe’s that good that she can make me sound good.â
Bacon and Nettles wrote several songs for the series. The ones that didn’t make it on the show became the soundtrack, “The Bondsman: Hell and Back.” Of the three songs that made it, one is a duo that Bacon and Nettles perform during a flashback scene, and another is a solo by Nettles. âIf we’re lucky enough to get a second season, I hope we can keep exploring the music,” Bacon said.
Along with The Bondsman, Bacon appears as the bad guy in the upcoming The Toxic Avenger remake. âI would love to make the perfect romantic comedy or a great action film or historical drama or whatever it is,” he said. “[But] horror’s just a genre that I dig, and I’m happy to go back to it.â
