
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is paying tribute to legendary actor-turned-director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer.
On Sunday, December 14, the couple was found deceased in their Brentwood home, with “lacerations consistent with a knife,” TMZ reported.
Bass took to X on December 15 to honor Reiner’s legacy.
“This is a devastating loss for our city and our country,” Bass wrote. “Rob Reinerâs contributions reverberate throughout American culture and society, and he has improved countless lives through his creative work and advocacy fighting for social and economic justice. An acclaimed actor, director, producer, writer, and engaged political activist, he always used his gifts in service of others.”
Honoring Rob Reiner and Michele Singerâs Impact on the Community
The mayor went on to share that she is personally âheartbrokenâ by the tragic loss, highlighting several of Reinerâs contributions and advocacies.
“I knew Rob and have tremendous respect for him,” Bass noted. “Among his numerous contributions, Rob helped create First 5 California, a landmark initiative funded by a tobacco tax to support early childhood development programs.”
She continued, “He and Michele fought for early childhood development and marriage equality, working to overturn Proposition 8. They were true champions for LGBTQ+ rights.”
Bass also thanked the first responders for their swift response and assistance.
“I want to thank all of the first responders who were called to this tragic event,” she concluded. “The investigation is ongoing. I’m holding all who loved Rob and Michele in my heart.”
The Obamas Offer Their Condolences
GettyMeanwhile, former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama also paid heartfelt tribute to Reiner and Singer. In a statement shared via Varietyâs X account, the couple said they are âheartbrokenâ by the tragic loss.
“Michelle and I are heartbroken by the tragic passing of Rob Reiner and his beloved wife, Michele. Robâs achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen,” the statement reads.
“But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of peopleâand a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action. Together, he and his wife lived lives defined by purpose. They will be remembered for the values they championed and the countless people they inspired. We send our deepest condolences to all who loved them.”
Reiner was a father of four: Tracy, whom he adopted during his first marriage to Penny Marshall, and Jake, Nick, and Romy, whom he had with Singer.
