Ahead of tonight’s episode, “Late Night with Seth Meyers” posted the host’s moving tribute to the late Rob Reiner. Although Meyers is a renowned comedian, the YouTube video contains no jokes, only memories of a brilliant filmmaker.
Seth Meyers Remembers Rob Reiner
Reiner and his wife, Michele, were tragically found dead in their home on December 14, 2025. Meyers, on his NBC late-night show, recounted one of his favorite memories of the “Stand by Me” director. In this story, Meyers described the 100th birthday party he attended for Norman Lear.
As Lear produced “All in the Family,” which Reiner starred in, Reiner was also at the party. When someone at the event asked Lear how his career started, Meyers said the producer “was sort of struggling to come up with a way to answer that question.”
Then, Meyers remembers Reiner stepping in to help Lear out. “Rob yelled out, from the back of the room, he said, ‘Norman, tell them the story about how you once hid in a birthday present.’ And then Norman launched into this story that he’d clearly told a hundred times, if not more. And it was just the most wonderful story,” Meyers said.
According to Meyers, Reiner continued to prompt Lear with various stories throughout the night. “I know this sounds like a story about Norman,” Meyers then said. “But it’s also a really great story about Rob, because Rob was known … for getting the best out of people. And if you watch his films, you know that is something he had this skill with. But to see him in person and know that’s what he was like in his real life as well, it was just so truly special to see.”
Seth Meyers’ Kind Words About Rob Reiner
NBCAfter telling a lovely story about Reiner, Meyers described the man who had recently appeared on his show for the very first time. “He was just a person who was so full of love,” Meyers said of Reiner.
Later, Meyers described his feelings the first time he ever watched “This Is Spinal Tap,” which was Reiner’s feature film directorial debut. “I just remember like, just my ears perking up at like, what comedy could be. Like … the kind of stories you could tell,” Meyers said. “I feel as though he’d almost like, reached out of the television to me and I’m sure so many other people like me and said like, ‘you should do this. You should try to do this with your life. It’s as much fun as it looks,” Meyers continued about Reiner’s influence on him.
“He was a man who set an example, and there’s such a value in that,” Meyers said at the end of his tribute. He ended by sending his condolences to the Reiner family.
