Lauryn Hill Expresses Heartfelt Regret in Emotional Tribute to D’Angelo

Lauryn Hill is paying heartfelt tribute to her longtime friend and collaborator D’Angelo following his passing on Oct. 14 at age 51. The Grammy-winning singer shared an emotional Instagram post filled with photos of the late neo-soul legend — including one of them posing together, side by side — along with a deeply personal message reflecting on his artistry, influence, and spiritual depth.

“People need reflection. I regret not having more time with you,” Hill wrote in her caption. “Your undeniable beauty and talent were not of this world, and a presence not of this world needs protection in a world that covets light and the anointing of God.” She went on to thank D’Angelo for being “a beacon of light to a generation and beyond” and for “charting the course” for artists who came after him.

Hill praised D’Angelo for embodying both “strength and sensitivity in Black manhood,” writing, “You moved us, stirred us, inspired and even intimidated others to action with your genius.” Her message ended with a heartfelt prayer that he had found peace “far from selfishness, fear and greed” and love to his family and true friends.

The post quickly drew emotional reactions from fans and artists alike. Singer H.E.R. commented, “What a tribute ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️,” while another user wrote, “The two of you, separately and together, changed my life for the better with your music.” Others reflected on their timeless duet, calling it “forever legendary.”

A Timeless Collaboration Between Two Icons

Hill and D’Angelo’s connection runs deep, rooted in their 1998 duet “Nothing Even Matters” from Hill’s landmark album “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.” The slow, soulful ballad became one of neo-soul’s most defining records, blending their signature harmonies and emotional intimacy.

In a 2008 Rolling Stone interview, D’Angelo recalled the session, describing Hill as “warm and sweet” and saying he recorded his vocals for the track in just an hour. Their collaboration represented the essence of late ’90s soul — authentic, spiritual, and grounded in emotion.

Hill’s new tribute reflects that lasting bond and shared artistry. She thanked him for “making space during a time when no similar space really existed,” honoring how he influenced an entire generation of R&B and soul musicians.

Born Michael Eugene Archer, D’Angelo helped redefine modern R&B through his distinct blend of gospel, funk, and soul. His debut “Brown Sugar” (1995) introduced a new wave of neo-soul, while “Voodoo” (2000) — featuring the now-iconic “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” — made him one of the most innovative voices of his era. The album topped the Billboard 200 and earned him multiple Grammys, including Best R&B Album.

With just three albums — “Brown Sugar”, “Voodoo”, and “Black Messiah’ — D’Angelo left an enduring mark on music and culture. His vulnerability, spiritual depth, and artistry influenced countless performers, including Beyoncé, Tyler, the Creator, Missy Elliott, and Doja Cat.

As Hill expressed in her post, D’Angelo’s spirit continues to resonate far beyond his music. “You sir, moved us, stirred us, inspired and even intimidated others to action with your genius,” she wrote. “I love you and I miss you. May God grant peace and shelter to your family, true friends, and genuine appreciators, Brother, King.”
