Legendary Actor, 92, Coming Out of Retirement for Fantasy Film Sequel

Turns out retirement doesn’t last forever; even for an iconic actor like Michael Caine. Variety reports that the acting legend, now 92, is in talks with Lionsgate to reprise his role in a sequel to the 2015 fantasy flick “The Last Witch Hunter.” Yep, you read that right: Caine might just be back on screen with Vin Diesel almost a decade later.

‘The Last Witch Hunter’ Found Fans

In the first film, Diesel plays an immortal warrior named Kaulder who is trying to stop an evil witch from unleashing a plague upon the world. Caine stars as the priest, Dolan, who assists him. Critics weren’t exactly lining up to praise the movie though (hello, 18% on Rotten Tomatoes), but audiences were a little kinder giving it a 44%. And let’s be real; $140 million worldwide on a $90 million budget is nothing to scoff at (Box Office Mojo). Sometimes a movie doesn’t need critical love to find its fans.

So now, against all odds, Lionsgate is betting on a sequel. And the possibility of Caine coming out of retirement for it? That’s the real twist no one saw coming.

Lionsgate Makes It Official

Lionsgate’s Group Chair, Adam Fogelson, couldn’t hide his excitement about the sequel, Variety reports. “Vin and I have partnered many times over the years, and he is a true force in our industry,” he said. “I’m thrilled to be reuniting with him as he returns to this iconic role, and excited by how advancements in filmmaking technology now allow us to economically deliver a sequel on an even more ambitious scale.”

Translation: they’re going bigger, bolder, and flashier this time around. No release date yet, but the studio is clearly confident the fantasy crowd (and Vin Diesel’s action fanbase) will definitely show up when the time comes.

Diesel even hinted that he had been filming over the summer, sharing a behind-the-scenes tease on Instagram:

Michael Caine Hits Pause on Retirement

Back in 2023, Caine said he was calling it quits on acting after filming “The Great Escaper.” He told BBC at the time: “I’ve figured, I’ve had a picture where I’ve played the lead and had incredible reviews… The only parts I’m liable to get now are 90-year-old men.” Fair enough; except it seems like he’s had a change of heart.

And honestly? We love that for him. With over 60 years of career highs (from playing pro thief Charlie in “The Italian Job” to beloved butler Alfred, in “The Dark Knight” trilogy) Caine has more than earned the right to decide when and how he exits. If that means dusting off his priest robes for another round of witch hunting, who’s going to complain? Not us.

What Fans Could Expect

There are no official plot details yet, and casting is still under wraps beyond Vin Diesel. But the thought of Kaulder and Dolan teaming up again already has people curious. Will it be darker? Funnier? Bigger in scope? If Lionsgate is promising “ambitious,” we’re expecting some serious spectacle.

Love it or hate it; looks like “The Last Witch Hunter” has managed to snag a sequel almost ten years later… and with Michael Caine possibly back in the mix, it just went from “why?” to “okay, now we’re interested.”
