Lego Jabba’s Sail Barge is the must-have Christmas gift for Star Wars fans

The big new Lego Star Wars set for this Christmas is Jabba’s Sail Barge from Return of the Jedi and it looks amazing.

It’s been a long time since Lego was seen as just a toy for children – if it ever was – with dozens of new sets released every year aimed solely at adults, in terms of complexity, subject matter, and price – from one based on Jaws to the recent 2-in-1 The Legend Of Zelda set.

There can be some crossover though and every year, in the run up to Christmas, Lego release a giant-sized Star Wars set that costs hundreds of pounds. Kids can appreciate them, but they’re clearly aimed at their parents, especially as many of them are based on the original trilogy.

This year’s great temptation is a recreation of Jabba’s Sail Barge from Return of the Jedi, including minifigures of Jabba the Hutt and an all-new ‘Huttslayer’ Princess Leia.

Basically, a massive anti-gravity pirate ship, the model measures 77cm long, 25cm wide, and 25cm high, and is made up of almost 4,000 Lego pieces.

The sail barge features the iconic textile sails seen in the movie, and the deck cannon used to destroy it, but also a number of details that have been added to Star Wars canon over the years, including a cockpit, prison cell, armoury, fully-equipped kitchen, and even Jabba’s bed.

You can fold down the whole side of the barge to get at the various different rooms or pose the mini-figures, which includes R2-D2 serving drinks and musician Max Rebo and his brick-built organ.

As well as Jabba and Princess Leia you also get mini-figures of Bib Fortuna, Salacious Crumb, a Gamorrean Guard, C-3PO, and three other of Jabba’s criminal goons: Kithaba, Vizam, and Wooof.

Kithaba is actually a skiff guard and works with the Desert Skiff & Sarlacc Pit set from earlier in the year, which in retrospect was clearly intended to complement the Sail Barge.

The Skiff set is £69.99 but Jabba’s Sail Barge is a much more expensive prospect at £429.99. It’s not a coincidence these type of sets are always released at this time of year though, as it’s clearly aimed at being a main Christmas present.

The Sail Barge set will be released on October 6 and will be available from the Lego website and official Lego stores. However, a free sign-up to be a Lego Insider will grant you the chance to buy it slightly earlier, from October 3.

Signing up as an insider will also get you a free Luke Skywalker’s Lightsaber set, which isn’t available any other way and replicates the lightsaber Luke uses while fighting aboard the Sail Barge.
