Lena Dunham Wouldn’t Say No to Returning to ‘Girls’

It’s been eight years since “Girls” wrapped its sixth and final season. But, somehow, the show still feels relevant to many women to this day. The show was a new type of female-led ensemble, pushing the boundaries of sex and drugs. It featured multidimensional characters that were neither entirely good nor entirely bad. At its heart was the relationship between Lena Dunham’s Hannah, Allison Williams’ Marnie, Zosia Mamet’s Shoshanna, and Jemima Kirke’s Jessa.

Created by Dunham, the show launched the careers of many of its stars, including Adam Driver and Williams. But it also put Dunham in the public eye in an uncomfortable way. The majority of the show’s criticisms were directed at her.

Given that, it may come as a surprise to some to hear that she would happily return to that world. Not only that, she already has an idea of how Marnie, Shoshanna, Jessa, and Hannah’s lives have been going since we last saw them.

Lena Dunham Knows Where Everyone Ended Up: ‘Marnie — It’s Third Marriage’

Dunham is currently busy working on “Too Much,” her first series since “Girls.” Although she’s focused on her new show, the idea of returning to the world of “Girls” seems to appeal to her.

“If we had something to say that was really specific and it was a moment in their lives where we felt like revisiting it — like millennial women becoming mothers or stepping into menopause or going to live at old-age homes — I would always want to work with those people again,” Dunham told Variety.

Dunham even has a strong idea of where each character is in life.

“Shoshanna was married to, then divorced from, the mayor of New York City, and she runs an athleisure startup that’s zero-waste,” Dunham confirms. “Marnie — it’s third marriage. She still sings, but I think Marnie really needs to take it to sex and love addicts anonymous. Jessa is unvaccinated and lives on a boat in Croatia. Adam is a cult theater actor, and he’s probably living in Berlin, and Ray is still on city council and running his coffee shop and doing better than anyone. Elijah is the fourth lead on a sitcom, making a good amount of money and still looking for love in all the wrong places.”

And Hannah? “She teaches at Bard and loves raising her son. She probably has a girlfriend who’s, like, a chef. And she’s less obsessed with being famous. That is where I feel that she would land.”

All the “Girls” Have Expressed a Desire to Revive the Show

Dunham is not the only one who would love to see the “Girls” back together. All three of her female co-stars have expressed a desire to return.

“That’s like if someone asked me, ‘Would you like to go back to college?’ Of course I would,” Kirke told Glamour. “Cause I would finally do it right. So yes, I would do it all over again.”

“I would love it,” Williams told The Guardian. “I know that Zosia [Mamet] has been pushing for a spin-off, which I would voraciously consume and try to elbow my way into. I kind of want us all back together. It was so fun and it was the beginning of my career, so I didn’t have the perspective I have now on just how lucky we were, or to know how unusual a creative experience it was.”
