A ‘tribute’ to late One Direction star Liam Payne left many in tears tuning into London’s New Year’s Eve fireworks.

On Tuesday night the skies of the capital lit up with a spectacular fireworks display on the banks of the River Thames.

However, coverage of the event, which aired on BBC, sparked an emotional reaction for some after they noticed a subtle nod to Payne, who died aged 31 in October.

During one part of the fireworks display, as red, yellow and blue sparks were set off, One Direction’s hit song What Makes You Beautiful played.

Many quickly shared their reaction to hearing the song played as part of the display a few months on from the singer’s death.

‘Fair play to London! Those fireworks were amazing! Loved the tribute to Liam Payne,’ Emma posted on X.

‘London New Year’s Eve fireworks were amazing!! Probably the best one yet out of all the years they’ve done it. They even dedicated to Liam Payne,’ Stacey shared.

‘Anyone else crying at the Liam Payne tribute during the London fireworks?’ Holly added.

More than 100,000 people watched the fireworks display, with millions more watching on at home.

This time around new hologauze technology was used for the first time to create holographic images of British icons and notable events as the fireworks were set off.

They included the London Eye being filled with the Union flag in honour of the 80th anniversary of D-Day last year, Olympic medals to celebrate the success of Team GB at the Paris Olympics and Paralympics and Paddington Bear.

The tribute to Payne came a few days after five people were charged in connection with his death in Argentina, which happened after he fell from the balcony of a hotel in Buenos Aires in October.

Those charged with manslaughter are his friend Roger Nores and two hotel workers who a judge said were ‘reckless in facilitating his transfer to his room by taking him there’, while another two hotel workers have been charged with supplying cocaine.
