More information is surfacing following the tragic death of actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who passed over the weekend. Multiple reports confirm that the actor was swept away by a powerful current while swimming at Playa Grande beach in Cahuita, Limón, Costa Rica.

According to an ABC News report, Warner’s young daughter was with him at the time and was rescued on the beach by bystanders.

The “Cosby Show” alum was on a family vacation when the incident occurred. Costa Rica’s volunteer lifeguard association, the Caribbean Guard, confirmed that no lifeguards were present at Playa Grande during the time of Warner’s drowning. The report claims volunteers try to resuscitate the actor for 45 minutes.

In a Facebook post shared Monday, the organization explained that lifeguards typically patrol the beach but were “redirected” to nearby Playa Negra and Chiquita due to a recent spike in water emergencies in those areas.

The Caribbean Guard described Playa Grande as a “challenging” beach, adding that signs in both English and Spanish warn visitors of strong currents and drowning risks.

They noted that the tragedy “happened very quickly,” and despite efforts from people on the beach who entered the water to help Warner, “they did not arrive in time.”

In July 2017, Warner introduced the world to his daughter with a tender Instagram post showing him cradling her in his arms. “Peaceful time with family takes on a whole new meaning now…😍😍😍” he wrote alongside the heartfelt image.

Though he kept his wife out of the spotlight, Warner’s love for his family was evident. In another post, he called their daughter “the beautiful manifestation of our love” and lovingly referred to her as “our ‘mini us.’”

Just weeks before his sudden passing, Malcolm-Jamal Warner opened up about the quiet joy he found in family life. In a May episode of the Hot & Bothered podcast, the late actor—who died at age 54 in a drowning accident on July 20—shared rare insights into his marriage and fatherhood journey.

Warner revealed he married his wife in 2017 and reflected on the deep connection they shared. “At some point during this time… I was like, ‘If I’m going to have a kid, this is the person that I would want to have it with,’” he said.

Though Warner kept his wife’s identity private, he made it clear just how meaningful their bond was—even early in their relationship. “If something happened and we weren’t together romantically, she would still be the person that I would want to raise a child with,” he said.

“I’ve never, never second-guessed it [since],” Warner added. “There was a moment where I realized when people say, ‘When you know, you know,’ that’s what that feeling is.”
