Pamela Warner is remembering her son, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, with both heartbreak and gratitude. The actor, best known as Theo Huxtable on “The Cosby Show,” died in July at age 54 after an accidental drowning off the coast of Costa Rica.
In an emotional interview with Robin Roberts on “Good Morning America”, Pamela reflected on her sonâs life and their bond, saying she has found peace in his passing.
âIâm very grateful that I was chosen to be his mother,â she shared. âThere was nothing left on the table. ⦠I feel that our journey together as mother and son was complete.â
His Wife & Daughter Still in Deep Grief

Pamela admitted the pain remains raw for Warnerâs wife, Tenisha, and their daughter. âChildren process differently,â she explained. âShe watched them resuscitate him, try to resuscitate him. She saw that, and I know thatâs awfully, awfully traumatic.â
âShe loved her father dearly. She adored Papa. He was Papa,â Pamela added. âAnd so theyâre both in deep grief.â
Clarifying Reports Around His Final Moments

Pamela also addressed confusion surrounding Warnerâs final moments. Early reports suggested he drowned while saving his daughter, but she clarified that his daughter was never in the water.
âShe was on shore,â Pamela said. Instead, Warner was caught in an undertow while swimming with another man, who managed to rescue himself. âHe was a more experienced swimmer, but Malcolm was not,â she explained.
Pamela revealed that her granddaughter and Tenisha had already been in Costa Rica for three weeks as part of an immersion program before Warner joined them. âSheâs homeschooled and this was part of an immersion program,â Pamela said, adding that âthe husbandsâ came during the final week for âthe fun part.â

Keeping His Legacy Alive
Both Pamela and Tenisha are working to honor Warnerâs memory. Pamela urged fans to continue supporting his vision: âLove where you can, give when you can. Just be better. Just be better. Because thatâs what he wanted, and thatâs what he was working toward. We can all be better selves.â
Tenisha, who married Warner in 2017, also broke her silence with an Instagram post marking their anniversary. âThank you for holding us in so much love during this tender time,â she wrote. She announced plans to launch The Warner Family Foundation to continue the coupleâs shared mission of nurturing childrenâs creativity and inner light.
Pamelaâs heartfelt reflections and Tenishaâs tribute underline Warnerâs lasting impact as a husband, father, and artist. His family continues to celebrate the man who left what Pamela described as âan indelible mark on the world.â
