Martha Stewart Reveals the NBA Player Who Broke Her Toe Courtside

Martha Stewart is warning basketball fans after a courtside moment at a New York Knicks game left her with a fractured toe and a painful lesson.

The 84-year-old lifestyle icon revealed that she accidentally broke her toe during a Knicks playoff game at Madison Square Garden in May while sitting near the court. Appearing on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on Dec. 16, Stewart explained that the injury happened in the final minutes of the game when Knicks point guard Jalen Brunson unintentionally stepped on her foot.

At the time, Stewart was wearing open-toe shoes, a choice she now strongly advises against. She said she knew immediately that her toe was broken and jokingly dubbed the injury the “Brunson fracture,” explaining that the impact was instant and painful. To make matters worse, the game went into overtime, leaving her stuck in her seat and unable to step away to address the injury right away.

Despite the mishap, Stewart said Brunson had no idea what happened. She never told him directly but later mentioned it to his parents, including his father Rick Brunson, a former NBA player and current Knicks assistant coach. According to Stewart, they found the story amusing, and the only thing she received in return was a signed basketball for her grandchild.

A Fashion Warning From the Front Row

Stewart used the moment to issue a clear warning to fans who love courtside seats. Sitting that close to the action comes with risks, especially when fast-moving athletes and flying feet are involved. Open-toe shoes, she said, are a definite no.

The injury has since affected her footwear choices, with Stewart sharing that open-toe shoes are currently the only option she can comfortably wear while her toe heals. Still, the setback has not slowed her down professionally. Stewart continues to make public appearances and recently fronted American Eagle’s holiday denim campaign, where she modeled multiple looks and shared her practical approach to fashion and comfort.

During the same interview, Stewart emphasized that clothing choices should always fit one’s lifestyle. She encouraged people to move around in jeans, test how they feel, and make sure they work for everyday life rather than rushing into a purchase.

Health, Discipline, and Living Well at 84

While the broken toe was an unexpected inconvenience, Stewart has consistently shared that overall health and longevity remain central to her life. Earlier this year, she spoke openly about her wellness routine and credited discipline, movement, and mental engagement for staying healthy into her 80s, according to NBC Insider.

Stewart has said she wakes up early, often around 4 a.m., starts her day by reading the news, and prioritizes physical activity. Pilates several times a week, along with hiking, horseback riding, and hands-on work across her many projects, helps her stay active and energized. She has also pointed to her mother as a major influence, noting that she lived a vibrant, active life into her 90s.

For Stewart, aging is not about slowing down but staying involved, challenged, and curious. Even with a fractured toe, her outlook has not changed. As she previously put it, “Aging is not about dying; it’s about living well.”
