Earlier this year The McBee Dynasty: Real American Cowboys star was ordered to report to prison in South Dakota after pleading guilty to bilking the government out of more than $4 million in a multi-year crop insurance fraud scheme. Since he self-surrendered on December 1, his close-knit family has been navigating the world without their beloved patriarch. Meanwhile, McBee Sr. has had to get used to being a federal inmate.

On Wednesday, McBee Sr.’s son Cole McBee took to social media to read a letter from his dad where he discussed how he was doing being bars.

“He’s doing as well as could be expected under the current circumstances as he gets adjusted to a life in federal prison,” Cole said in the <a href=”https://www.instagram.com/reel/DSY0yiVDlRM/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Instagram Reel.

Rather than spending his days outdoors, the Missouri farmer and rancher is now “very busy” with taking classes and working at the prison rec center. By the time his shift ends at 8 p.m., he has just enough time to shower, eat, and spend about an hour answering mail before it’s time for final count and lights out, Cole explained.

“He does read every single letter and said he looks forward to it every single night,” said Cole, who also shared the address for the federal prison camp in Yankton where fans can send his dad mail. While the elder McBee can’t respond to every letter he receives, he wants people to know he appreciates every message he gets.

“Again, he just wanted to say thank you for all the love and support. And he’s getting through,” Cole continued. “Obviously, he is in federal prison; it’s not great. It ain’t like he’s living the life. It’s a change, and it’s different. But he’s a very optimistic person, and he takes it one day at a time.”

His family — which includes sons Steven McBee Jr., Jesse McBee, and Brayden McBee — is also grateful for the messages they’ve received from fans.

“The love and support we have been getting is so awesome and we appreciate it more than y’all will ever know,” Steven Jr. wrote on Instagram.

McBee Sr. is expected to spend 24 months behind bars. But he is hoping that he might not do all that time. The Bravo personality told <a href=”https://people.com/steve-mcbee-sr-prison-update-11873497″ target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>People that he was actively seeking a pardon from President Donald Trump. He said he’s also received advice from fellow reality star turned jailbird Todd Chrisley. The Chrisley Knows Best star, who was serving time for fraud, was released from prison in late May after he and his wife, Julie Chrisley, received pardons from Trump.

“It’s a long, drawn-out, extensive process,” McBee Sr. said of his hoped-for pardon. “I’m very hopeful that the pardon could take place based on the details of the situation. I feel so privileged that I even have the avenue to do that. I’ll be so glad just to get the pardon application filed, and whatever happens happens.”
