Meghan Markle & Prince Harry’s Sweet 4th of July Tradition

Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Share Sweet 4th of July Tradition

For Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, the 4th of July is more than just America’s celebration of Independence.

It turns out it also marks the nine-year anniversary of the royal couple’s second date.

In a post on Meghan’s Instagram account, the Duchess of Sussex reveals that that second date sparked a tradition that means so much to the couple, they now share it with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

In the post, Meghan expalins, “Our second date was the 4th of July 2016 and H brought me cupcakes to celebrate. Now, all these years later, our two children are in on the tradition.

Happy Independence Day!
May your day be as sweet as these cupcakes 🧁”

The post shows a series of three photos. The first is a plate of cupcakes the couple shared with Archie, 6 and Lilibet, 4, this 4th of July. The second is a photo from Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s second date. A black and white version of the photo also appeared in their Netflix documentary series “Harry & Meghan.” The third picture shows the cupcake Prince Harry brought Meghan on their second date.

Prince Harry Wrote About Cupcakes In His Book ‘Spare’

Prince Harry wrote about the couple’s second date and its significance in his 2023 autobiography “Spare,” recounting how the relationship was quickly heating up.

In the book, he explained, “She walked in wearing a pretty blue sundress with white pinstripes. She was aglow. I stood and said: I bear gifts. A pink box. I held it forward. She shook it. What’s this? She opened the box. Cupcakes. Red, white and blue cupcakes, to be exact. In honor of Independence Day. I said something about the Brits having a very different view of Independence Day from the Yanks, but, oh, well.”

The Duke of Sussex also revealed that the couple kissed, and his future began to reveal itself.

“Again the conversation flowed, crackled. Burgers came and went, uneaten. I felt an overwhelming sense of Overture, Prelude, Kettle Drums, Act I. And yet also a sense of ending. A phase of my life — the first half? — was coming to a close,” he wrote of the all-important date.

Prince Harry Has Considered Seeking American Citizenship

As Prince Harry acknowledged in his book, the 4th of July is viewed very differently by the British than it is by Americans.

But Harry has actually considered becoming an American.

In an interview on “Good Morning America” in 2024 at the Invictus Games, Prince Harry told Will Reeve he has considered becoming an American citizen. “American citizenship is a thought that has crossed my mind but certainly not something that is a high priority for me right now.”

But while he may not be pursuing citizenship, Prince Harry says he loves his adopted home and living with his family in Montecito, California. “It’s amazing. I love every single day,” he told GMA. But does that mean he feels like an American now. No. Harry told Reeve, “Do I feel American? Um, no. I don’t know how I feel.”
