Meghan Markle ‘Reached Out’ To Estranged Father Following ‘Life-Saving’ Surgery

Meghan Markle and her father, Thomas Markle, have been estranged since 2018, but a recent medical emergency had her reaching out.

A spokesperson for Meghan confirmed the news to PEOPLE.

“I can confirm she has reached out to her father,” they said.

According to the outlet, the spokesperson “did not provide further details,” but they were told by a source that “the outreach from Meghan is very recent, following the reports of her father’s medical emergency.”

Thomas Markle’s Surgery Required Amputation

Thomas Markle’s sudden medical emergency occurred in the Philippines, and he was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery after falling ill at his home. He then had a three-hour surgery, where the 81-year-old underwent a below-the-knee amputation.

“There was no option. I was told the leg had to be removed, and it was a case of life or death,” his son, Thomas Jr., told the Daily Mail. “My dad is being very brave. His foot turned blue and then black. It happened very quickly.”

Thomas Jr. went on to say that doctors remain “extremely concerned for his father’s health, adding that he was told “the next two or three days are critical.”

This comes a day after Thomas’s son provided a preliminary update on his father to the Daily Mail.

“I took dad to a hospital close to our home, and they did various scans, and the doctors said his life was in imminent danger,” Thomas Jr told the outlet. “They raced us by ambulance, with the sirens going, to a much bigger hospital in the centre of the city. My dad has undergone emergency surgery. I would ask everyone around the world to keep him in their thoughts.”

Thomas Markle Has Had Other Heath Issues

Thomas’s daughter, Samantha, also provided some insight into her father’s past health issues.

“My father has been through two heart attacks, a stroke and an earthquake. I hope he can pull through this,” she said.

The heart attacks occurred just before Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding in May 2018, which left Thomas unable to travel and walk his daughter down the aisle.

In 2022, he suffered a stroke, which left him unable to speak for months.

And most recently, Thomas was  “trapped” on the 19th floor of an apartment building in the Philippines after a 6.9-magnitude Earthquake struck in October, his daughter Samantha revealed in a post on X (per The New York Post).
