Megyn Kelly in brutal form revealing the ‘meanest’ celebrities she’s met
Megyn Kelly has never exactly been shy about voicing strong opinions or throwing a little shade, but she closed out 2025 by unloading a particularly spicy list of celebrities that she says she’s found difficult to deal with. Speaking to Daily Mail, the US broadcaster reflected on some of the most uncomfortable encounters of her career, branding several A-listers the ‘meanest’ or most ‘unpleasant’ people that she’s ever met or worked with. It was proof that Kelly, now 55, has spent long enough in the media spotlight to have collected a fair few grudges. (Picture: Getty Images)
Kelly’s career began quite far from celebrity culture. A former attorney, she moved into broadcast journalism in the mid-2000s before becoming one of Fox News’ most recognisable faces. She later made a high-profile jump to NBC, fronting Megyn Kelly Today, before launching her own independent podcast, The Megyn Kelly Show. Across TV news, morning television and podcasting, she’s interviewed presidents, superstar musicians, actors and activists, giving her a front-row seat to some famously prickly personalities. Some of whom stick quite firmly in her memory… (Picture: Getty Images)
When asked which star instantly came to mind as her least favourite, Kelly didn’t hesitate with her answer. Jane Fonda, she said, topped the list. The veteran actress and long-time left-wing activist, now 88, clashed with Kelly during a 2017 interview when questions turned to cosmetic surgery. Kelly said Fonda appeared visibly offended, an exchange that lingered with her years later. It was, she suggested, less about malice and more about tension that never quite lifted once the cameras started rolling. (Picture: Getty Images)
Kelly explained that the plastic surgery question wasn’t random provocation. She claimed producers had advised her to avoid discussing sex scenes from Our Souls at Night because Fonda’s co-star Robert Redford – sat next to her – felt uncomfortable talking about the subject. Instead, Kelly steered the conversation elsewhere, only for it to backfire. The awkwardness stuck, becoming one of those interviews that lives on long after broadcast. (Picture: Getty Images)
There was another name that Kelly raised. She admitted she ‘hated to say’ anything negative about Bruce Willis, acknowledging that the Die Hard star is ‘struggling’ with frontotemporal dementia. Still, she described their 2006 Fox News interview as a deeply unpleasant experience. According to Kelly, Willis was ‘so ungiving’ and ‘so ungenerous’, giving little back and clearly wanting to be anywhere else but in the chair talking to Megyn. (Picture: Getty Images)
Recalling the encounter, Kelly said: ‘He was just clearly so unhappy to be there. I mean, that’s fine, he has his politics, but why agree to come on?’ The frustration, she suggested, wasn’t ideological but practical. Turning up to an interview only to disengage entirely left a lasting impression on Megyn, one that still stands out among decades of chatting to high-profile guests. (Picture: Getty Images)
Kelly was more cryptic when discussing former colleague Al Roker. She didn’t explain what exactly caused her dislike of the Today Show regular and weatherman, instead offering a cultural nod to help paint a picture. ‘Let’s just say, if my mother ran into Al Roker, she would turn into Larry David bumping into Alan Dershowitz at Martha’s Vineyard very quickly.’ It’s a reference that requires a little Curb Your Enthusiasm knowledge, but the message was clear enough. Whatever happened, it wasn’t something she was keen to revisit in detail. Her and Roker aren’t exactly best buddies, put it that way. (Picture: Getty Images)
Her sharpest criticism was reserved for a certain Ellen DeGeneres, however. Based not on personal dealings but on the experience of a close family member who worked as a producer on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Kelly claimed staff were warned never to make eye contact with the host. ‘They were all told, if you come across her in the hallway, even if you’re already looking in that general direction, to look down at the floor…’ (Picture: Getty Images)
Kelly added: ‘You would look down like a serf. You’d actually have to avert your eyes.’ She said the story pre-dated the show’s 2020 bullying scandal, which later accused DeGeneres’ workplace of fostering a toxic environment. ‘I’ve never heard anything like that before with any of these big personalities,’ Kelly said. ‘And I knew that before the bullying scandal broke in 2020, so when it did, I was not surprised at all. She is a bad person.’ (Picture: Getty Images)
Not every celebrity left a sour taste, though. Kelly balanced her criticisms by praising a handful of stars that she found genuinely pleasant to work with or interview. She described the controversial Russell Brand as ‘warm’ and talk show host and singer Kathie Lee Gifford as ‘nice’. She also said she is ‘a fan’ of Jada Pinkett Smith, calling her ‘so sweet, so sincere and so genuine’. (Picture: Getty Images) Add Metro as a Preferred Source on Google Add as preferred source
