After the tragic death of director Rob Reiner, and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, was announced, many fans began to express sympathy for legendary director Mel Brooks.

Brooks was best friends with Rob’s father, Carl Reiner. The two shared a lengthy career in Hollywood together. The two frequently collaborated over many decades, and they created the popular “2000 Year Old Man” routine.

Fans Rush to Support Brooks

Fans took to social media to express their sadness for Brooks.

“Just realized 99 year old Mel Brooks is still alive and is going to wake up to the news about someone he has known since he was two years old and whose father was his best friend for 60 years. My heart breaks for him,” one user wrote shortly after the news broke on Sunday night.

Another added, “So very sad for Mel, he’s still grieving Robs father Carls death.”

Others noted how it made them ill, knowing that Brooks outlived Rob.

“[G]enuinely sick to my stomach thinking about mel brooks now outliving his best friend’s son, especially under such horrific circumstances,” the user wrote.

“I hope someone has checked in with Mel Brooks. I can’t imagine what he’s feeling right now,” another added. “Rob Reiner probably meant a lot to him since Mel and Carl were best friends. Ugh, what an awful tragedy.”

Brooks Remembers His Late Best Friend

After Carl Reiner passed in 2020, Brooks gave a heartbreaking interview in December 2021 with The Guardian, where he remembered his friend.

“Ahhh, I miss him so much,” he told the interviewer.

He told a sweet story about how Carl would ask Brooks to come over.

“He would call me in the evenings and say ,‘Come over, come over! I got a big stuffed cabbage for us!’”

He added, “Even at the end he was always Carl: funny, sweet-natured, warm and just the most wonderful friend a person could ever have. People know how good he was, but not how great.”

The “Spaceballs” director recalled how the two would watch “Jeopardy!” together, but since Carl died he no longer finds joy in it.

“It’s over for me. All the stuff I used to do with Carl is still around, but I don’t enjoy it if I don’t share it with Carl. It’s as simple as that,” he told the outlet.

When the news broke of Carl’s passing in 2020, Brooks gave a brief statement on social media where he remembered when the two would perform together.

“When we were doing ‘The 2000 Year Old Man’ together there was no better straight man in the world,” Brooks wrote. “So whether he wrote or performed or he was just your best friend — nobody could do it better. He’ll be greatly missed.”
