Michael B. Jordan Breaks Silence on His Fatherhood Plans in Candid New Interview

Michael B. Jordan

Michael B. Jordan is looking ahead to a new chapter. During a candid sit-down with David Letterman for the upcoming sixth season of Netflix’s “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction,” the 38-year-old actor and director opened up about how his priorities are shifting and why fatherhood has been on his mind lately.

Filmed in London, the episode shows Jordan and Letterman talking over beers and a casual game of darts as Jordan reflects on how directing his new take on “The Thomas Crown Affair” has reshaped his lifestyle. According to Complex, Jordan described his day-to-day as surprisingly low-key, calling his schedule “boring” due to long hours preparing for each shoot. Letterman joked back that his own routine of dogs, grocery runs and married life was hardly action-packed either.

Even with his demanding workload, Jordan admitted he has been thinking seriously about his future beyond filmmaking. He told Letterman that he eventually wants a family and is approaching the idea with intention. Jordan said he plans to “start out small,” explaining that taking care of plants, then a dog, would help him feel prepared for fatherhood. “If I can take care of a plant, I can take care of the dog. If the dog’s cool, then I have a shot,” he said, noting that he is not rushing the timeline but sees children in his future. Letterman encouraged him, telling Jordan he was “right on schedule,” per The Grio.

Jordan’s full interview premieres when “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction” returns to Netflix on Dec. 16, 2025.

Jordan Reflects on His Career and Big-Screen Momentum

Jordan echoed that forward-looking mindset in a separate conversation for Deadline’s “The Actor’s Side,” where he reflected on the path that led him from his early career to becoming one of Hollywood’s most in-demand actors and directors.

Jordan told Deadline that acting was never the original goal. Growing up, he imagined a career in basketball or baseball before an early role on “The Wire” shifted his trajectory. When his character was killed off, Jordan questioned what would come next, but the uncertainty led to his breakout performance as Oscar Grant in “Fruitvale Station” — the first of many collaborations with director Ryan Coogler.

Now, Jordan is earning awards buzz for “Sinners,” where he plays Prohibition-era brothers Smoke and Stack. The dual performance has already earned him Best Actor nominations at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards. He explained that portraying two characters was both a creative and technical challenge, and he broke down how he and Coogler approached the process on set.

A Personal Connection and What’s Ahead

Jordan also discussed his unexpected connection to the late Chadwick Boseman, telling Deadline that they unknowingly played the same role years apart on the soap “All My Children.” He said he didn’t learn about the coincidence until later, calling it a meaningful link between their careers.

Looking ahead, Jordan is preparing to star in and direct a “reimagining” of “The Thomas Crown Affair.” He told Deadline that friends even reached out after a real-life museum robbery in Europe, jokingly asking whether he had anything to do with it while filming abroad. Despite the heavy workload, Jordan said these moments have helped him appreciate how far he has come and what the next phase of his life might look like.

As he told Letterman, “I want a kid. I want children.”
