Michael J. Fox is sharing what really went on behind the scenes of the âBack to the Futureâ films, including unexpected on-set challenges and personal reflections decades later. In his new memoir, âFuture Boy: Back to the Future and My Journey Through the Space-Time Continuum,â Fox opens up about filming the 1985 classic, working with co-star Crispin Glover, and reaching out to Eric Stoltzâthe actor he famously replaced.
Michael J. Fox Opens Up About Tension on Set With Crispin Glover
In the book, Fox reveals that working with Glover, who played George McFly, occasionally led to tension on set because of Gloverâs unconventional acting style.
âNobody puts Crispin in a box. But that didnât prevent the camera crew from literally building a box around him,â Fox explained, via the New York Post.
Glover had âhis own ideas as to how and where his character should move,â Fox wrote. During one scene, Glover was supposed to stay in a specific lane between a clothesline and Foxâs character, Marty McFly. âAs Crispin approached the camera, he was meant to stay in a lane between the clothesline and me. But Crispin had a different plan,â Fox recalled.
The crew responded by creating physical boundaries to keep Glover in frame.
âThe boundaries were defined by sandbags and C-stands, trapping Crispin into adhering to the parameters of the shot,â Fox explained.
Despite the difficulties, Fox emphasized that he respected Gloverâs creative approach. âHis talent was unquestionable, although his methods sometimes created friction,â he wrote. âStill, I respected how he remained true to George (as he understood and embodied him).â
The approach ultimately worked. âBack to the Futureâ went on to gross more than $380 million worldwide and earned an Academy Award, cementing its place as one of the most beloved films of the 1980s.
The ‘Family Ties’ Star Reveals He Reached Out to Eric Stoltz Decades Later
Fox also uses the memoir to share a personal story that took four decades to unfold. Before Fox joined the film, Eric Stoltz was cast as Marty McFly. He was later replaced during production, a move that changed Foxâs career forever.
In the book, Fox describes finally reaching out to Stoltz to acknowledge that history. âEric has maintained his silence on the subject for forty years, so I was prepared for the likelihood that he’d prefer to keep it that way,â Fox wrote. He sent Stoltz a letter asking to meet, adding, âIf your answer is âpiss off and leave me aloneâ⦠that works, too.â
Fox recalled that Stoltz’s “beautifully written reply began, ‘Piss off and leave me alone!’ Thankfully, this was followed by ‘I jest…’ Eric was thoughtful about my outreach, and although he respectfully declined to participate in the book, he seemed open to the idea of getting together.”
