Coldplay brought retired actor Michael J Fox onto the stage towards the end of their Glastonbury performance in a huge surprise.

The Back to the Future icon – who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at the age of 29, in 1991 and has since taken a back seat from the spotlight to focus on his condition – was welcomed onto The Pyramid Stage with a guitar in hand.

Frontman Chris Martin introduced the actor to the stage by singing: ‘Here’s another legendary Michael, one who just totally rocks with his chuck berry riff and the way he punched Biff- ladies and gentlemen please welcome, Michael J Fox.

Michael joined the band for Fix You and Humankind and played the guitar from his wheelchair.

Fans went completely wild for this collaboration and were emotional to see the actor who retired from on-screen work in 2020.

Ending the night, Chris called out: ‘The main reason that we’re in a band is watching Back To The Future, so thank you to our hero forever and one of the most amazing people on Earth, Mr Michael J Fox.’

The band had several guests throughout their headline slot, welcoming Little Simz, Palestinian-Chilean singer-songwriter Elyanna, and Nigerian music legend Femi Kuti.

Chris also paid tribute to the Glastonbury founder, Sir Michael Eavis during the performance telling him: ‘We just want to thank you, as humans go you’re the best of all sorts, you’re a musical charmer, you’re the world’s greatest farmer. Whoever got knighted wearing shorts? Thank you Michael, we love you.’

Coldplay has now headlined the festival five times, making history as the only act to have done so.
