At the Investigative Reporters and Editorsâ 50th anniversary gala, Michael Keaton honored the late Charlie Kirk, whose shocking death by gun violence has stirred conversations across the country. While reflecting on Kirkâs family and legacy, Keaton reminded the audience that tragedy transcends ideological divides.
âShooting People Will Never Answer Anythingâ
During his speech, Keaton said, âBefore we start to get into the meat of this thing, Iâm going to take a minute to say that, regardless of how I probably â not probably â have disagreed with many things he said, Charlie Kirk leaves behind two kids and a wife. You gotta remember that,â according to Variety.
Keaton added, âBecause in the end, shooting people will never answer anything, and the irony that he was killed with a gun is unbelievable.â
In addition to Keaton, â60 Minutesâ journalist Scott Pelley also spoke on the subject during his opening remarks as the host of the IRE gala.
Pelley said, âCharlie Kirk was murdered to silence his speech, and three months earlier, former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark were murdered to silence their speech.â
He went on to say, âMany admired Kirk; many did not. His catchphrase was âProve me wrong.â To some, that phrase was controversial â even dismissive. But the core idea was: Bring the proof, and letâs debate. Whether you agreed with Kirkâs ideas or Hortmanâs, their murders, their silencing is blood on the First Amendment.â
Kirkâs Wife Speaks Out
Kirkâs tragic death took place on Wednesday, September 10. He is survived by his wife, Erika Kirk, and two children, a 1-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter.
Since his tragic death, Erika has taken a moment to promise her husbandâs hard work will continue, and to acknowledge the family they built together.
Erika Kirk said, âMy husband laid down his life for me, for our nation, for our children. No one will ever forget my husbandâs name, and I will make sure of it.â
She added, “Charlie loved his children. And he loved me. With all his heart. And he made sure I knew that every day.”
Kirk went on to say, âHe was the perfect father. He was the perfect husband.â
She also recently shared a touching post from her husband. Just weeks ago, Charlie Kirk shared an image on the beach with his daughter, and the message left fans emotional.
He captioned the image, âHappy birthday to our incredible daughter. Teaching her to know God alongside (Erika Kirk) is the greatest privilege. Having a family will change your life in the best ways, so get married and have kids. You wonât regret it.â
