At the Investigative Reporters and Editors’ 50th anniversary gala, Michael Keaton honored the late Charlie Kirk, whose shocking death by gun violence has stirred conversations across the country. While reflecting on Kirk’s family and legacy, Keaton reminded the audience that tragedy transcends ideological divides.

During his speech, Keaton said, “Before we start to get into the meat of this thing, I’m going to take a minute to say that, regardless of how I probably — not probably — have disagreed with many things he said, Charlie Kirk leaves behind two kids and a wife. You gotta remember that,” according to Variety.

Keaton added, “Because in the end, shooting people will never answer anything, and the irony that he was killed with a gun is unbelievable.”

In addition to Keaton, “60 Minutes” journalist Scott Pelley also spoke on the subject during his opening remarks as the host of the IRE gala.

Pelley said, “Charlie Kirk was murdered to silence his speech, and three months earlier, former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark were murdered to silence their speech.”

He went on to say, “Many admired Kirk; many did not. His catchphrase was ‘Prove me wrong.’ To some, that phrase was controversial — even dismissive. But the core idea was: Bring the proof, and let’s debate. Whether you agreed with Kirk’s ideas or Hortman’s, their murders, their silencing is blood on the First Amendment.”

Kirk’s Wife Speaks Out

Kirk’s tragic death took place on Wednesday, September 10. He is survived by his wife, Erika Kirk, and two children, a 1-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter.

Since his tragic death, Erika has taken a moment to promise her husband’s hard work will continue, and to acknowledge the family they built together.

Erika Kirk said, “My husband laid down his life for me, for our nation, for our children. No one will ever forget my husband’s name, and I will make sure of it.”

She added, “Charlie loved his children. And he loved me. With all his heart. And he made sure I knew that every day.”

Kirk went on to say, “He was the perfect father. He was the perfect husband.”

She also recently shared a touching post from her husband. Just weeks ago, Charlie Kirk shared an image on the beach with his daughter, and the message left fans emotional.

He captioned the image, “Happy birthday to our incredible daughter. Teaching her to know God alongside (Erika Kirk) is the greatest privilege. Having a family will change your life in the best ways, so get married and have kids. You won’t regret it.”
