Speculation was quick once word of Trachtenberg’s death began to circulate. Initial rumors suggested Trachtenberg had been dealing with serious health issues and had received a liver transplant in the months before her death. No one in Trachtenberg’s camp confirmed the speculation. Still, the family refused an autopsy on the Gossip Girl star, which might mean they were aware of health concerns before her passing.

While an autopsy was not performed, the medical examiner did generate a toxicology report. The medical examiner has updated her official cause of death due to the report’s findings. The New York City Office of the Medical Examiner recently connected with <a target=”_blank” href=”https://www.cnn.com/2025/04/16/entertainment/michelle-trachtenberg-cause-of-death/index.html” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>CNN. According to a spokesperson for the office, Trachtenberg died from complications of diabetes.

There are two common types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder where the body attacks insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, leading to little or no insulin production. It is often diagnosed in childhood. Type 2 diabetes usually develops in adults and involves insulin resistance, where the body still produces insulin but cannot use it effectively. It is unclear whether Trachtenberg was a type 1 or a type 2 diabetic or when she was diagnosed. Complications from the disease can range from organ and nerve damage to an increased risk of infections.
