Although it’s been 17 years since Heath Ledger died, the Batman actor has not been forgotten. In a recent conversation with Dax Shepard on his Armchair Expert podcast, Michelle Williams reminisced about Ledger and how the sensitive, unique soul touched so many around him.
Shepard Recalls Time He “Fell in Love” With Late Actor Heath Ledger
âI feel obligated to say that I knew him a little bit when he was getting sober, and I donât know that Iâve ever fallen in love with somebody so quickly,â Shephard said of Ledger. âThis is one of the most special boys Iâve ever met. And I can feel the weight of the world on him in a very special way. That kind of broke my heart. I was very, very sad, and I thought he was just so special.â
“So special, so special, thank god there’s Matilida,” an emotional Williams agreed.
Yeah, what a guy,” Shepard continued. I feel very lucky that I just got to… There’s like a handful of people I’ve met like that in my life, where I’m just like, ‘Oh wow, there’s something, there’s just a heart here thatâs just leaking out everywhere.’â
âYeah, an incredible sensitivity,” Williams replied.
Williams Dishes on How Motherhood Shifts Her Perspective
On October 28, 2005, Williams and Ledger welcomed their daughter, Matilda, into the world. A few months later, Williams was nominated for her breakthrough role in Brokeback Mountain. “Was that a natural transition?” Shepard asked about suddenly becoming an Oscar nominee while still getting used to being a mother.
âNo, we had a baby,” she said. “But I suppose maybe it’s a good thing about being young is that you don’t have so much life experience that you can contextualize things. So you’re really just going with the flow.âÂ
Shepard goes on to praise Williams for having “a healthy relationship with the job” of being an actor. “On the heels of an Academy Award nomination, most people would be like, ‘Okay, get me the list of all the directors I can now work with,’ and it’s time to go,” he said.
Williams now has three children with husband Tony Kail. She recalls how her outlook has changed from having her first child with Ledger, Matilda, to now. But — she still thinks it’s important to find a balance between being a parent and doing what you love.
âKids are such great life checkers,â she said. âThey force you to put your best self in front of them. You canât abdicate your life and your work and your own desires, but you do have to put them in check and figure out which master youâre going to serve.â
