Miley Cyrus opened up about her iconic raspy voice while being interviewed by Zane Lowe in a recent podcast.
The “Flowers” singer said she suffers from Reinkeâs edema and it affects her ability to tour.
â[Itâs] given me a lot of the tone and texture that has made me who I am, but itâs extremely difficult to perform with because itâs like running a marathon with ankle weights on,â Cyrus bravely shared.
The disorder is described as “a noncancerous vocal cord disorder,” according to the Cleveland Clinic. Symptoms include hoarseness and a deeper voice, with the condition often being caused due to excessive smoking.
Cyrus clarified that while her earlier years of partying and smoking did not help her condition, it was not the reason she has it.
“Sometimes at the end of the day you know I’ll call my mom and she’ll go ‘Oh you sound like you’re talking through a radio,’” she recalled. “And that’s how you know I’m really tired because it creates that like ultimate vocal fry.”
Cyrus Has No Plans to Fix Her Voice
The 32-year-old added her unique voice was the result of a “very large polyp,” and she has no intentions of removing it for fear she would no longer sound like herself.
âI do have this blessing of a condition that I live with,â Cyrus added. âMy voice is super unique because of it.â
The Grammy winner humorously noted during the COVID pandemic, celebrities were happy to have anonymity while going places. Cyrus used the grocery store as an example. She said even in a mask, people knew it was her due to her voice.
Cyrus’ New Album Drops May 30
Cyrus said she wants to embark on a tour, but has to figure out the logistics of it.
“I put a tour together like every other week ’cause I want to do it,” the former Disney Channel star added. “But it would have to be in a way that is sustainable for me.”
It has been over 10 years since the singer went on tour, according to Billboard. Cyrus last tour was the 2014âs Bangerz Tour.
Though it is uncertain if Cyrus will be going back on tour at some point, she is set to release her ninth studio album titled “Something Beautiful” on May 30. In addition, she will be releasing a visual album that will only appear in theaters one night.
