Minecraft movie trailer looks painful for the parents that are going to be dragged along to see it

Jason Momoa and Jack Black star in the first trailer for A Minecraft Movie, which doesn’t feature the Steve you’re expecting.

Video game adaptations on television have greatly improved over the last few years, with the likes of The Last Of Us and Fallout, but most movies are still mediocre at best and, as the Borderlands film has shown, often not even that.

Whereas that movie’s problems stem in part from the source material, the upcoming Minecraft movie may have a problem in its live action direction, with the game’s blocky charm seemingly taking a backseat to fish-out-of-water comedy. Or at least that’s the impression given by the first trailer.

The set-up is similar to the recent Jumanji films, as four struggling misfits are ‘suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal’ into the Minecraft Overworld, where they embark on a quest with Steve, played by Jack Black.

These four misfits are Garrett ‘The Garbage Man’ Garrison, played by Aquaman’s Jason Momoa; Henry played by Sebastian Eugene Hansen; Natalie played by Emma Myers, best known for playing Enid in Wednesday; and Dawn played by Orange Is The New Black star Danielle Brooks.

There’s some big names in the supporting cast too, namely Jennifer Coolidge (The White Lotus), Kate McKinnon (Barbie), and Jemaine Clement (Flight Of The Conchords), although it’s unclear what parts they play.

‘Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative… the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world,’ the synopsis reads.

While any Minecraft movie is going to be primarily aimed at kids, this brief trailer doesn’t exactly inspire confidence that it’ll be anything above run-of-the-mill – especially as it feels like it’s following a very worn-out premise.

A Minecraft Movie, as it’s officially titled, is directed by Jared Hess who is best known for directing 2004’s Napoleon Dynamite. He’s also previously worked with Jack Black on 2006 film Nacho Libre.

Perhaps crucially though, both those films were co-written by Jared and his wife Jerusha Hess, whereas A Minecraft Movie is written by Hubbel Palmer, who also worked on Napoleon Dynamite, and Chris Bowman, who hasn’t worked on much else at all.

There are two obvious problems for adults who are going to end up watching it with their children, the first being the CGI-heavy visuals that only look vaguely like the game; especially as the humans don’t look like they’re properly composited into the shots.

The other problem is the comedy, which so far seems painfully unfunny and as if it’s barely trying.

We’ll have to wait until next year though to see how it all turns out, as the film is slated to be released in cinemas worldwide on April 4, 2025.
