How Her Character Helped Shift TV History

Aubrey joined “Modern Family” in 2011 when she was just four years old. The Emmy-winning sitcom, which aired from 2009 to 2020, was widely praised for its portrayal of LGBTQ+ families and relationships.

Lily, her character, was the adopted daughter of Mitch and Cam, played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet.

The show also made headlines in 2016 for casting Jackson Millarker, the first openly transgender child actor on a major scripted TV series. He appeared in an episode titled “A Stereotypical Day” as one of Lily’s friends.

Director Ryan Case celebrated the casting on Instagram, writing: “He’s eight years old, from Atlanta, and just so happens to be transgender. He plays Lily’s friend Tom in this week’s Modern Family, and he’s wonderful. One of the many reasons I love being a part of this show.”

A Full-Circle Moment

For many fans, Aubrey’s quiet, confident embrace of her identity, as seen in a scene from Modern Family, felt like a story coming full circle.
