Netflix viewers have branded a new Christmas thriller the best movie they’ve seen this year.
Of course, there’s plenty on your watchlist over the next few days, from Squid Game and the return of Gavin and Stacey, as well as The Traitors and Outnumbered all about to drop.
But after the success of Black Doves on Netflix, we may have found your next option to indulge in on the streaming service in the hours leading up to Christmas.
Carry On follows an airport security officer who races to outsmart a mysterious traveller attempting to slip a dangerous item onto a Christmas Eve flight.
It stars Taron Egerton as TSA agent Ethan, alongside Jason Bateman and Sofia Carson, with plenty of terrifying suspense, airport chases and security showdowns as the stakes grow as high as ever.
Fans have even been comparing it to Die Hard, insisting that it’s not a Christmas movie, just one set at Christmas.

Viewer @duartengsilva wrote on X: ‘#CarryOn is a fantastic Christmas movie that brought back Die Hard 2 vibes! Taron Egerton shines as an action hero, and I hope this isn’t the last we see of this character. A fantastic performance in a fantastic film!.’
@mik_dr0p wrote: ‘Edge of the seat thriller! One bag of popcorn is not enough. Airports, behind the security details are so interesting to watch. Reminds me of the movie Speed(Keanu Reeves) guess 1998. Not exact, similar thrill. Saturday night was worth it!
@MarkDavis added: ‘#CarryOn (Netflix) is fairly silly in a dozen ways, but it is a solidly entertaining popcorn-chomper with a great cast that delivers a good time, and sometimes that’s all you want..’

@PlantBsdSprtsChek said: ‘#CarryOn on Netflix is a freaking great watch and could be the next #DieHard. By that I mean a movie set during Christmas that’s not a Christmas movie.’
@luqwho said: ‘#CarryOn is probably the last movie I’ll see this year before 2024 ends and probably the contender for one of the best movies I’ve seen this year. Rarity to find a #Netflix movie this good. Great production and one of the most satisfying villain deaths on screen. Must watch!’
‘If you haven’t yet – watch #CarryOn on @Netflix I was sweating bricks/ on the edge of my seat watching it. So good!,’ @JessicaOnAirDJ said, while @MovielandAU added: ‘New #Netflix movie “Carry On” is not only a contender for Christmas Movie Of The Year, but in general; Best Movie of 2024. For fans of Die Hard, this one is a suspenseful masterpiece! Add carry on to your watch list!.’

@SecretAvenger22 also said: ‘One of the best films Netflix has released this year, that actually isn’t a Netflix film no matter how they’re selling it. It’s a DreamWorks film. The film is 2 hours of suspense, carried successfully by Jason Bateman and Taron Egerton.’
‘#CarryOn surprised me in a major way. The action sequences, acting from Bateman and Egerton, the overall stress of it all makes this by far one of the best Netflix Originals of the year. I just wish that next time they’ll put something of this caliber into a theater,’ @tylerboxd also wrote.

Carry On has proven to be such a success that it has become Netflix’s biggest release, reaching the top spot on the streamer’s global top 10 list of English-speaking movies.
It’s scored 42,000,000 views in just one week, making it the biggest opening for a Netflix film this year.
Meanwhile, it’s scored an impressive 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, despite the curse of Netflix original holiday selection rarely scoring well.
Fans are calling it the new Die Hard (Picture: Netflix)
Kingsman star Taron previously revealed he would ‘be open’ to returning for the right sequel.
According to Digital Spy, he said: ‘It’s kind of like an extraordinary set of circumstances, so I think it would need a really innovative, creative idea to feel like a worthy idea for a sequel.’
He added that sequels ‘work for Die Hard, so who knows?’
Carry On is available to watch on Netflix.
